NEW (April 2023) Gerd Neumann Camera Tilting Unit CTU - XT.
This replaces the now-discontinued Gerd Neumann Camera Tilting Unit.
As the sensors of modern CCD/CMOS cameras grow larger, it becomes more difficult to align them perpendicular to the optical axis and parallel to the focal plane.
Sometimes the sensor is not mounted accurately in the camera housing, which can also result in uneven sharpness and focus from one side of the sensor to the other, even though it may appear that you have mounted the camera properly. Here is where the Neumann CTU will help.
The Neumann CTU-XT allows you to adjust the focal plane's tilt quickly and precisely. Similar units from other manufacturers have three pairs of push-pull screws at 120° and can be difficult to adjust. Push/Pull screws can be too coarse, and a lot of adjustment is made via elastic or even plastic deformation of the main body to achieve the required image plane movements.
In contrast, at the heart of the Neumann CTU are three radial screws with a very light cone shape formed at one end. By screwing these cones in, the two parts of the Neumann CTU are separated by a minimal amount. A whole turn of a screw corresponds to a separation of only 0.2mm. Due to this fine movement and the large outer diameter of the Neumann CTU, it is quite easy to adjust the sensor's position to less than 1/100mm.
The CTU-XT features a thickness of just 11.3mm, allowing you to use the CTU in many more setups: For ZWO cameras, replace the 11mm spacer that features on many ASI cameras.
Both sides of the Neumann CTU are held together with three strong packs of disk springs and secured with set screws. These springs provide a very strong holding force and also keep everything together. The overall tightness of the Neumann CTU is very high, so if you mount a camera with a weight of less than 3kg to the Neumann CTU, you will not have to tighten the set screws (two for each radial adjustment screw). For use with heavy imaging outfits, we added the set screws to be on the safe side, but it is unlikely that even heavy camera assemblies will need them. But, should they be required, they will only need to be slightly tightened.
The CTU XT has female threads on both sides, with no preferred orientation. When installed, you will have a short length (8mm) of pure male thread, so you will have a male/female connection. The CTU XT has an outer diameter of 99mm and a weight of 160gr.
It is made of black anodised aluminium and uses stainless screws. A high-quality (swiss made) 2.5mm hex-driver for the radial adjustment is included.
The CTU XT is available in two versions :
- CTU XT - M48 with M48x0,75 threads (Art.-Id.: 10105148
- CTU XT - M54 with M54x0,75 threads (Art.-Id.: 10105154)
