About this product

Model:  ts_tsfocr30
Part Number:  TSFOCR30

The TS 3" Rack and Pinion Focuser is an alternative to the Starlight Feather Touch FTF 3025 focuser.

The TS 3" Rack And Pinion focuser has an M117x1 connection thread on the telescope side that enables it to be installed on the StellaLyra 10" Ritchey Chretien and Classical Cassegrain telescopes.

With a 6kg maximum load bearing capacity this focuser is capable of comfortably handling heavy large format cameras/filters wheels/off axis guiders without flexure or slipping.

This focuser has over 4" of focus travel. If you plan to use a focal reducer with your RC/CC we would advise purchasing the Short Version of this focuser

A well made focusser
27 July 2023  |

A purchased the long version of this focuser to replace the original on my Stella Lyra 10" CC. It is a definite improvement and saves faffing about swapping out the large extension rings that came with the scope.

For imaging it works really well but for visual be warned that the focuser will not rack fully inward with the 10" CC so you only get 65mm of travel not 109mm. With a 2" diagonal and 2" eyepiece it is not possible to get focus, although with 1.25" fittings it will - just.

It I want to do visual, which is not often, I swop back to the original focuser.

I can recommend this focuser, but get the short version if you wand a direct replacement for the original.

Good focuser but one or two little hitches
20 March 2023  |

I'll start by saying it represents good value, as it is among the cheapest of its size class and it seems to not suffer appreciable backlash for my speed of imaging system (f5, f6.2 without reducer)
The two issues I have had are that it does not seem totally rigid, a little play when tight, and that it's very much not so when rotating, as it does not have a proper bearing but a PTFE/Nylon ring that some brass flat drive screws slide on. When loose enough to allow rotation, I found it would change position depending on where I looked in the sky (the vignette shadow moved and stars were sharper on one side of the meridian to the other). This was solved by tightening those brass screws but does render the rotation function a bit moot as it is too tight to rotate with now. maybe it's about striking a balance but with my scope as touchy as it is with alignments, I'm not keen to risk upsetting it.

Perhaps for people who are looking for a premium focuser, the feathertouch would be a better bet? This one is a bit flawed but certainly still good for its price, and I'd consider it an upgrade from slippery crayfords.

Great focuser
09 March 2022  |

I bought the long travel version of this direct from TS a while back. It is excellent and the long focus range makes it able to cope with 3 different reducers and visual configs of my APM 107mm refractor. Really smooth and stable; takes a heavy load, and it saved me a packet over a Starlight.

By default it comes with a 117mm screw connector for on ota but it uses a more standard 105mm plug intermediate connector that can be adapted to various OTAs. You would want the different short travel version for RC scopes.
