About this product

Model:  skywatcher_flattener_esprit_80_20187
Part Number:  20187

An optically-matched M48-fitting doublet field flattener for Sky-Watcher's Esprit 80 ED PRO triplet refractor.

The M48 fitting provides a large clear aperture to reduce halation and a precision thread ensures the triplet and doublet lens groups are precisely aligned on the optical axis perpendicular to the image.

When used with the field flattener the Esprit-80's imaging circle is 33mm.

Notes

  • When fitting a DSLR camera you need only a M48 Ring to suit your Canon, Nikon or Sony DSLR camera (M48 spacer is included).
  • The rear thread of the supplied spacer is M48.
  • The spacing for dedicated CCD imaging cameras is 55mm from mating surface when using supplied M48 spacer.  Spacing from flattener mating surface without supplied spacer is 61mm (flattener has M62 thread).

Excellent Flattener, essential for imaging
08 June 2015  |

The Esprit 80ED is a fantastic APO but unless you are going to use the diagonal it will not focus a DSLR without this adaptor, bearing in mind that the scope is largely sold for imaging this should really be included in the box as it seems to be in the US. But to be fair to the guys at FLO when I queried this with them they started to bundle the two.

I use this with a DSLR camera so connection to the scope and camera is very straight forward and makes for a solid mounting. At first I tried using a 50mm extension tube with the standard 2" adaptor used on the scope to attach the diagonal but this was almost a disaster as the standard compression ring is fine for holding a diagonal but barely takes the weight of a camera.

In addition to providing a flat imaging circle the flattener makes for a very secure means of attaching even a heavy camera as all sections are threaded onto the scope. The Adaptor that sits between the flattener and the camera T-Ring also includes a 2" filter holder which is useful for CLS, LPF and other filters as needed.

Image quality is pretty much as advertised, I have blown up my images as far as they will go in PixInsight and stars even in the corners remain as round and focussed as those in the centre of the image so no issues there.

As mentioned above this is pretty much an essential accessory if you are going to imaging with an Esprit, it provides not only the correct spacing but excellent image correction for a DSLR.
