About this product

Model:  bcortho-6-2954106
Part Number:  2954106

These new premium quality orthoscopic eyepieces from Baader are a worthy replacement for their earlier Baader Genuine Orthoscopic.

Baader also offers a Classic 32mm Plossl which when used with the three orthos produces a variety of useful and complimentary magnifications.

The 6mm and 10mm Classic Orthoscopics incorporate an inset volcano-top shape that provides eyelash clearance and comfortable folding rubber eyeshields. The 18mm Classic Orthoscopic and 32mm Classic Plossl also incorporate winged rubber eyeshields.

Baader Classic Ortho and Plossl Review by John Huntley

Features

  • Actual Field Of View (of orthos) has been extended to approx 50-degrees for easier target location.
  • Comfortable eye relief.
  • Superb colour correction.
  • Finely polished glass with multi-layer High Transmission broadband optical coatings.
  • Proper internal baffling and blackened lens edges for maximum light transmission and contrast.
  • Includes Rubber eye-shield

Note to spectacle wearers: The 18mm and 32mm focal lengths are good choices for spectacle wearers but for shorter focal lengths the Celestron XCel LX series eyepieces have greater eye-relief so are better suited.

Baader Ckassic Series Orthos
06 November 2023  |

I bought a pair of the 18mm to use with my Baader binoviwer on the planets and Moon. I have used two ancient pairs of 24 and 16.8 Kson Orthos for years and wanted an intermediate magnification.
Well made, good weight, well blackened and sharp edge to the field all boded well.
Had first light with them on my Askar 103mm triplet. I took the eyepiece wings off as I have astigmatism and they limited the field. Observed Jupitet and the views were excellent, sharp edge to edge, contrasty background, no flaring or unwanted reflections, four/five belts depending on the seeing and a nice shadow transit as well. Very impressive. My Ksons are very good too, but as it was also first light for the telescope I can't say how they compared to the 18mm Baaders as I didnt use them on the night as it was curtailed by cloud.. Very pleased with them, a great bargain at £54 each.

BCO 18mm

Great lightweight eyepiece that was made for binoviewing. I reckon that the 18mm and the 10mm to be the best of the range. Good clear and sharp images. Great service once again from FLO.

Nice eye piece's.

I bought these orthos 10 & 18mm following reviewing various lower priced EP's, I find the EP's very good on the eye and have no issue with their comfort.
Certianly a good lightweight EP and gives good clear viewing compared to some other cheaper lenses mainly plossl's, though that said they compare favourably with my Meade 4000 EP's which I do like .
I did consider buying the Q turret x 4EP's and barlow, howeve they were out of stock.

Super sharp eyepiece

I'd forgotten how sharp a simple orthoscopic eyepiece can be. Compared to my 10mm Vixen Plossl, the belts of Jupiter are much better defined. Only downside is the minimal eye relief, a well known feature of this design.

Have only had chance to use this eyepiece on the moon so far in my 8 inch sct. View was tack sharp and eye relief excellent. Small, lightweight and well engineered. Would recommend

great for the price

If your scope came with the standard 'super' 10mm and 25mm then you will probably heard plenty of advice telling you to consider replacing the 10mm eyepiece. In my previous scope I did this with a plossl and having recently bought a 10" f/4.7 I decided to give the Baader Classic Ortho 10mm a try. I have not been disappointed. If eye relief and a relatively narrow (compared to some eyepieces costing 4 times as much) filed of view aren't much of a problem I can wholeheartedly recommend one of these.
They represent a big step up in sharpness and contrast over a plossl and a massive jump compared to the stock 10mm supplied with some scopes. You really cannot go wrong with one of these unless you struggle with slightly tight eye relief. Well worth the money even just for the planetary views I have had so far. Jupiter and Saturn are fantastic in this little eyepiece. Get yourself one for planetary observations right now.
