This is the perfect product to use to make filters for binoculars and cameras in preparation for solar eclipse observations.

Arrived quickly and in perfect condition as always. Needless to say, I've had complete cloud cover since it arrived. Managed a ten second gap in the clouds and the filter performed superbly. Extremely good definition of sunspots through my 8" dob. Look forward to some clear skies.

Why spend a fortune on a solar filter for your telescope (or binoculars or whatever) when you can buy the film and make one? Two sheets (one from Altair Astro) gave me enough for my 150 mm objective, two finderscopes, my grandson's telescope, a webcam and a couple of smartphones - with half a sheet left over for future projects. I used a dilapidated cake ring as the frame for the large objective's filter and odd bits of plastic tubing for the smaller telescope lenses: place the solar film on a flat surface, smear some epoxy resin around one edge of the 'frame' and then lower if onto the film and leave to set; sorted.

I ordered the filter as soon as I've heard there will be an eclipse. I have DSLR camera. The filter arrived promptly. The instructions were easy to follow to make DIY filter. Shame about British weather though but I still managed few photos.

This solar film is, if you pardon the pun, night and day compared to earlier filter types I've used, such as mylar film. The packaging claims the optical quality to be equivalent to glass solar filters and I without doing a comparison myself, I do not doubt for a second that this could be the case. My sun photos are now, to my eye, of a professional standard and could only be improved with a hydrogen alpha scope. Different ball-park price-wise though! Okay, building the filter is a bit fiddly, but now that I've done it once, I feel I could do it again in half the time and have a neater looking end product. For the price of a sheet, I would perhaps suggest buying two for that reason. I'm happy with my first effort, however. It's the results that count not how amateurish the filter looks! My filter is being used on an old TAL2M telescope and in the 20+ years I've owned this telescope, I've never been more impressed with any image it has produced. Shame I can't post the photos on here. Anyway, in summary, buying this is a no-brainer if you want to view/photograph sharp, detailed images of the sun, including convection cells and sunspots.

The film arrived incredibly well packaged and I doubt even the most excited of postperson could've damaged it regardless of how they handled it.

The included instructions on how to make a filter are really easy to follow although instead of stiff card, I've opted to use styrene instead for an even more robust construction.

I will be trying it out this coming Thursday for the partial eclipse visible from the UK - clouds permitting of course.

FLO, as most people report, are prompt with dispatch and very easy to order from. Now, if only the Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro would arrive into stock, I'd be spending a far greater amount on my next upgrades! :o)

Before you do anything READ the intructions and read them again and take heed of all the warnings, they are there for a purpose.

If you plan to make your own solar filter then this paper is essential. Full instructions on how to make a filter are included, there are also other methods available online. You only get one sheet, so in reality if your scope is 127mm or over you'll only get one chance to make a filter. The paper is very fragile so take your time and be very careful not to damage it. It will be worth it though, the views of the sun are stunning. Delivery was very quick and well packaged.
