About this product

Model:  hyperion_zoom
Part Number:  2454826

NEW smaller, lighter Baader Hyperion Mark IV Zoom.

This 4th generation Baader Hyperion 8-24mm Click-stop Zoom is smaller (55mm wide) and lighter (290 grams) than its predecessor (the Mk-III model was 80 grams heavier). This makes it an especially good choice for use with binoviewers.

The click-stop mechanism has been improved - it has the usual 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 mm indentations but the mechanism is softer and more reliable in very cold conditions.

It has an additional four millimeter 'back-focus' so is more compatible with spotting scopes that accept 1.25" eyepieces. The longer back-focus, together with Baader's type A adapter ring, means it is more likely to achieve focus at infinity when used with a spotting scope and, when the 1.25 "nose-piece is removed, a 1 3/8" thread is revealed that enables the eyepiece to be screwed directly to Celestron Ultima spotters. A bayonet adapter is also available that enables the eyepiece to be used with Zeiss Diascope spotters.

The optical quality and specification is unchanged - it has the same wide 68 degrees FOV at 8mm and 50 degrees at 24mm and features Baader's 'Phantom Group' multi-coating on all air-to-glass surfaces.

It also remains fully compatible with the Baader 2.25 x Hyperion Barlow (sold separately).

As with previous Baader Hyperion Zoom eyepieces, the Mark IV model features a M43 thread for easy connection to a DSLR or T2 accessory via an optional M43 / T2 adapter.

The eyepiece is supplied with 1.25 and 2" nose-pieces that feature Baader's patented 'Zero Tilt Safety Kerfs' for added peace of mind (less likely to fall out of the eyepiece holder). A yellow storage pouch is also included.

Features

  • Seven element, multi-coated optics for remarkable sharpness, contrast and colour correction.
  • Smooth zoom action with click-stops at 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24mm.
  • Parfocal across the entire zoom range.
  • Wide 68 degrees FOV at 8mm, 50 degrees at 24mm.
  • 12-15mm eye-relief and adjustable rubber eye-cup for comfortable viewing with or without spectacles.
  • Includes both 1.25” and 2" barrels - threaded for filters.
  • 'Zero Tilt Safety Kerfs' for a secure fit in the eyepiece holder.

Baader Zoom

Very pleased with this so far. Only used it for solar viewing up till now in combination with a Lunt solar wedge and Baader polariser . Great for this activity as the 'seeing' can vary quite a bit in in a session and this then saves swapping eyepieces and polarising filter. Using it in a 100mm refractor. Am looking forward to testing it out on lunar viewing. I had a budget zoom before this and they are like night and day in quality of seeing. Very pleased with purchase. Excellent service as always from FLO also.

Excellent zoom.

I bought this to use in my Pentax spotting scopes, however, it will not focus to infinity.
The MK1V has been modified, to allow for 4mm more back focus, however, this modification does not work with Pentax scopes . In fact it makes no difference at all
To make it work I had to tape the adapter to the body, you can't use the locking ring because it sticks up too far.
Anyway, when it's taped on it works a treat. Focuses to infinity with quite a bit to spare.
Baader need to supply and an extra ring that screws down flat and it would be perfect.
The optical quality in my opinion is better than the Pentax zoom

If only I had bought this sooner

Disclaimer : I only use this zoom eyepiece in "slow" scopes : f/10 SCTs, and a more recently a daystar scout 80mm (also slow at f/17,5)

Night time use, compared to my fixed focal hyperion eyepiece (24, 13, 8mm)
My 24mm hyperion is better (edge sharpness, luminosity, eye positionning) than the "zoom hyperion" at 24, or I think it is.
At 13mm it is hard to fault the zoom eyepiece.
At 8mm I could not see much difference either.

Being able to adjust the magnification to be just above tonight's turbulence seeing is really cool...

Daytime use :
* C5 (birdwatching) : one eyepiece to rule the all.
* scolar scout 80mm : same as C5.

I have now two boxes, one for daytime (with the zoom eyepiece only) and one for night time (with my other eyepiece).

Definitely a keeper.

BAADER ZOOM

Used to think Zooms were beneath me having owned the good Vixen Zoom and using Abbes and Delites...well NOT this Baader .. lovely Black sky and clarity in my 925Sct and 130mm Apo..
24mm setting a bit narrow for some scopes so recommend a 25mm ED.or 24mm Pan to go with it, and for ultra critical a 9mm Tak abbe for the very best nights..
On a night of average seeing you will notice little or no difference on axis between it and the best Delites. This Zoom and its barlow really perform ..my friend uses that combo in his 76 Tak Apo and needs nothing else !!
Recommend this ahead of the Vixen Zoom in all departments!

Impressive eyepiece
Monday, 17 September 2018  |

I did a fair bit of research before buying this eyepiece. It was clear that there are some compromises to be made with a zoom eyepiece and itís not cheap. In the end I took the plunge and Iím glad I did.

Itís large but not overly so and is relatively light. That was important as I wanted to use it in my little Skywatcher ed72 as a grab and go set-up. At the other end of the scale, I also wanted to use it in my Revelation 16Ē dob so I wanted a lot! My conclusions;

The quality of the view is very good and for mere mortals like myself, itís difficult to tell much of a difference when compared with more expensive eyepieces. The Achilles heel is the field of view at 24mm but although it is somewhat restricted it is easy to live with. What is impressive is how much the field opens at higher magnifications. On my dob I cranked it up to 8mm ( 225x) on M13 and the view was very impressive.
Used with the Barlow lens on my little Skywatcher, it proved to be very flexible and gave equally good views. Being able to zoom-in to the right magnification was really useful.

Why only 4 stars - well it isn't parfocal although only minor adjustments are needed through the range and the restricted view at 24mm stopped it being perfect.

Most equipment reviews are subjective but I have to say I really like this eyepiece and would certainly recommend it.
