Turn Left at Orion
Hundreds of Night Sky Objects to See in a Home Telescope – and How to Find Them

Authors: Guy Consolmagno, Dan M. Davis

  • Now with double the number of night sky objects to observe
  • Designed for Dobsonian telescopes, as well as for smaller reflectors and refractors
  • Covers both Northern and Southern hemispheres
  • Spiral binding makes it even easier to use outdoors

With over 150,000 copies sold since first publication, this is one of the most popular astronomy books of all time. It is a unique guidebook to the night sky, providing all the information you need to observe a whole host of celestial objects. With a new spiral binding, this edition is even easier to use outdoors at the telescope and is the ideal beginner's book. Keeping its distinct one-object-per-spread format, this edition is also designed for Dobsonian telescopes, as well as for smaller reflectors and refractors, and covers Southern hemisphere objects in more detail. Large-format eyepiece views, positioned side-by-side, show objects exactly as they are seen through a telescope, and with improved directions, updated tables of astronomical information and an expanded night-by-night Moon section, it has never been easier to explore the night sky on your own. Many additional resources are available on the accompanying website, www.cambridge.org/turnleft.

Reviews

'This is quite possibly the most inviting guidebook ever written to help people with binoculars and small telescopes find, view, understand, and, most of all, enjoy everything in the night sky from the Moon and planets to distant star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. And if you think it's only for beginners, think again - every telescope owner should have a copy.' Dennis di Cicco, Senior Editor, Sky and Telescope

'Turn Left at Orion is an essential guide for both beginners and more experienced amateur astronomers who will find much inside to reinvigorate their passion for the stars. The diagrams are simple, clear and functional, and the text eloquently captures the excitement of observing. Stargazing has never been made so easy and if you buy just one book on observational astronomy, make sure it's this one.' Keith Cooper, Editor, Astronomy Now

'Since it first appeared in 1989, Turn Left at Orion has been an indispensable guidebook for the amateur astronomer possessing nothing more than a small backyard telescope. In this fourth edition, Guy Consolmagno and Dan Davis have revised, updated, and expanded its scope. This is not only an essential handbook for the novice, it's a useful reference for the seasoned backyard astronomer. Simply put, whatever your level of experience, you must have this book!' Glenn Chaple, Contributing Editor, Astronomy

'An exceptionally useful text, irrespective of whether you are a novice observer or a seasoned veteran. The changes that have been made to the book are so substantial that even those who own earlier ones will find it refreshingly new. It's not just recommended, it's simply a must have!' Astronomy Now

'This superb guide to locating and observing celestial bodies should be supplied with beginners' telescopes as a matter of course.' BBC Sky at Night Magazine

Wonderful book
28 July 2021  |

As a relative novice to observing, I found this book to be just what I needed. It does what it claims and I was able to find every object that I looked for using the supplied charts and instructions. Although it contains some interesting astronomical facts, this is primarily a practical book. It does not replace a detailed book on astronomy or a star chart.

A book for the novice or expert

I purchased this book from FLO and received the service they are famous for. TURN LEFT AT ORION is a very well thought out book and I love the spiral binding so it lies flat when open. So far I have only read part of the book but as a novice it has paid for itself already with the things I have learned. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Extremely useful

Received this last week and working my way through. Since then, my knowledge of DSOs and their home constellations has improved dramatically.

The book is much larger than I imagined and ring-bound; great for the field, not ideal for the tube.

Highly recommend.

28 May 2020  |

I can’t rate this book enough. It is helping me make the best of my telescope, and has helped me see wonders of our universe that have taken my breath away. A must have for beginners, and a great way to pass the time if your waiting on a long delivery time for your telescope.

FLO were brilliant in their delivery, (shipping this item ahead of my main order), and customer service from Steve was on point and more than I could have asked for.

I purchased this book along with our first telescope. It is large and very descriptive, exactly what you need when you are using your telescope, especially if you are new to it.
A definite must have.
