About this product

Model:  cel_pwrtnk_lithium_pro_18768
Part Number:  18768-CGL

The PowerTank Lithium Pro is for the true power user!  This higher-capacity unit is the latest version of the bestselling PowerTank Lithium. PowerTank Lithium Pro offers twice the battery capacity of the original, making it ideal for more demanding applications.

PowerTank Lithium Pro features the right ports and connections to accommodate a variety of devices. You’ll find a 12V DC 5A telescope power port (Celestron cable included), a 12V DC 10A car battery adapter port, and two 5V DC USB ports - one 2.1 A and one that supports rapid charging.

The power pack’s extremely portable form factor means it can go anywhere from a remote dark sky location for astroimaging to a weekend of camping. When powering your telescope, use the included 2” straps to secure the unit to your tripod leg where it is out of the way.

One side of the unit features a strip of LED lighting in both bright white and red. This turns the unit into a convenient safety light during star parties or a work lamp to clean up your observing area when the night is done. You can even use it as a bright emergency light during a power failure and illuminate an entire room of your home.

PowerTank Lithium Pro can also travel with you on your next vacation. At 158.74 Wh, it meets current FAA regulations (160Wh) from transportation in your carry-on baggage.  Please check in advance with your airline to verify they do not have stricter policies.

Advantages of Celestron’s LiFePO4 Battery

Powered by Celestron's Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, PowerTank Lithium Pro is smaller, lighter, and safer than sealed lead acid batteries. The technology is also more environmentally-friendly since it does not use toxic heavy metals.

PowerTank Lithium Pro’s LiFePO4 chemistry holds up to 2000 charge cycles and has an un-recharged shelf life of up to 10 years. That means you won’t have to remember to recharge your battery every few months like with a sealed lead acid battery. Its 17-hour capacity and lack of maintenance make PowerTank Lithium Pro the ideal choice for an emergency kit. Store one in your home, your garage, and even your office.

FEATURES

  • Extra-large capacity portable power pack featuring Celestron’s LiFePO4 battery technology
  • Powers your telescope for up to 17 hours
  • Features 2 USB ports for charging other devices, plus a 12V car battery adapter port
  • LED light panel provides bright white or red LED illumination for up to 25 hours
  • Perfect for astronomy, camping, emergency kits, and anywhere you need portable power
  • Meets current FAA regulations for carry-on baggage
  • 158.74 Wh, equivalent to approximately 13.22 Ah when running at 12v

Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery chemistry has significant advantages over other battery chemistries.

  • The LiFePO4 has an un-recharged shelf life of 10 years compared to 3 years for the Lithium Ion and 6-9 months for a Sealed Lead-Acid battery.
  • The battery performance of the PowerTank Lithium degrades at a much slower pace than other chemistries.
  • The LiFePO4 can be charged and discharged 2000 times compared to only 500 for a Lithium Ion battery and 300 for sealed lead-acid designs.
  • The batteries will last as long as the telescope you use it with!
  • The LiFePO4 uses phosphates instead of environmentally hazardous elements like cobalt or lead, commonly found in other rechargeable batteries.
  • It can withstand higher temperatures than lithium-ion designs and will not be a fire danger if accidentally punctured.

This, combined with its rugged design, make it the perfect outdoor power supply.

Ideal for simplified power support
22 February 2024  |

The initial charging time on receipt took longer than I was expecting (around 8 - 10 hours) and the tank got pretty toasty during that time. That being said, at full charge it worked well on my AM3/ASIAIR Mini/StellaMira 90 ED with 4" dew strap when all powered from the ASIAIR. The dew heater ate up a lot of the amps however and significantly reduced performance time so it would probably pay to have a controller in the loop. The power tank capacity seemed to improve after several uses so maybe there's an element of charge cycle top up over time. An expensive piece of kit but well made as to be expected from Celestron and SO worthwhile to be able to power everything from one device whether at home or in the field. Highly recommended.
FLO were as usual good with advice and providing a top delivery service as always.

Powertank
22 October 2023  |

I thought I would use this before I gave an honest and frank review. A review that will not hold back, but be brutally honest. After using this ‘Powertank’ I have to say, it is excellent. It does exactly what it should. I have no complaints. Robust, easy to use, light… what more is there? A very useful bit of kit.

well worth the money

I'm using it with an EQ6-r, Powers it all night with power to spare without any issues. It's much smaller and lighter than expected which is good

The included velcro strap isn't all that great, it slips down quite easily, I made a little table that clamps to the tripod and keeps the powerpack in one place.

Excellent piece of kit
29 June 2023  |

I bought this to power the set-up in my observatory. (an SW AZ-EQ6 Pro mount with two scopes mounted in tandem - so quite a payload). The observatory is 60 meters from the house and after pricing up the cost of cable, fittings, connection module for the observatory, etc, etc (not to mention having to dig a 60 meter trench accross the lawn - my other half's patience only extends so far and it seems that this was less than 60 meters!). So I thought I would give this a go as a much more convienient (and harmonious) option.
It's simplicity itself to use and it is proving to be everything I hoped it would be. The mount works beautifully and following two good observing sessions there is still loads of juice left in the tank. Since taking the plunge and buying the Powertank I have no intention of going to the trouble of laying a mains supply to the observatory, it's that good. It also has some addtional features (red or white light, USB outlets etc) which are helpful.
If you are wondering about splashing out for one, my reccommendation would be go right ahead, you won't be disappointed.
FLO were their usual exemplary selves - fabulous advice and fabulous service as always.
Peter

Best Power Tank I've Had
23 April 2023  |

I've only used it once so far since I bought it earlier this month but I am very impressed. I was able to power my asiair pro,zwo camera and my mount with still 2 bars of power left. This was after 7 hours of imaging. Something I could only dream of with my 2 Skywatcher 7ah power tanks together. Alex from Flo was really helpful. Taught me through which cables I will need to power my items

Doesn’t appear to work well with low power applications
24 March 2022  |

Haven’t tried this with my telescope mount yet, but when I tried to use the USB output to run an LED panel for flat fielding, the power kept cutting off after a few seconds. If I turned the intensity of the panel up then the problem went away, suggesting that there is a problem supplying very low power applications. Haven’t discussed with FLO yet, just hope the telescope mount draws enough current to keep the battery working.

Response:

This is correct behaviour - these have an auto shut off feature so if no or very little current is being drawn they automatically power down to conserve battery life. They will work fine when more current is being pulled.

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Bigger
07 April 2020  |

It’s very small, and it’s very light. So small and light that mine lives permanently on one tripod leg, with the lead cable-tied up to the top.

My old lead acid battery was rated at 17amp/hour, and would last about 2 hours with my gear. This one is rated at 13amp/hour, but it will power the same kit for 4 hours and still be at half power, according to the built-in battery level indicator.

Yes, it’s eye-wateringly expensive, compared to a car battery, but the massive run-time and the lack of weight, certainly mean you’re getting what you pay for.

excellent
01 April 2019  |

Evolution mount internal battery does not dispense with the need for power - dew strips, the mount itself (on prolonged sessions in the cold) and extras (e.g. Lymax cooler). I initially bought a RawPower LiPo which was (is) good but fails in cold weather. On to smaller Celestron LiFePo, nice and fine for marginal use with refractor, but not sufficient for my Evolution 8. Its usability was also somewhat hampered by the inability to handle multiple outputs and its cover flap got detached after one use.
Now this battery is a winner. Rated 10A, and unlike its smaller cousin it can handle multiple outputs at the same time. Cigarette plug and red/white light are super handy, too.
I tested it at 0 degrees C session for 8 full hours, it supplied both the Evo mount and dew heater strips for C8 tube , Nexstar controller and diagonal at the same time. After 8 hours battery was down only one half of its capacity. (granted, the main dew heater was sipping power as it was controlled by the temperature sensor,).
All in all, pricey but excellent.

Just what I was after
08 October 2018  |

The tank needed charging upon its arrival and initial charge took more than 10 hours to charge (left it on charge over night). I guess abiut 12 houts in total
I was able to charge both my Neq6 mount and USB hub for 6 hours on an almost frosty night with plenty of power remaining. Recharge was about 4-5 hours
The power cable is for a Celestron mount and has a screw adapter however I found the cable to be a snug fit for the Skywatcher EQ5 and NEQ6 mount. There is another cable available from FLO if preferred.
The tank is light, rugged and can a few several devices simultaneously using mount power feed, cigarette socket and USB sockets.
I recommend this powertank
