Explore Scientific EXOS-2 PMC-Eight GOTO Mount

Belt driven, PMC-8 electronics with built-in Wifi and 10kg imaging / 15kg visual load capacity

The award winning Explore Scientific EXOS2-GT PMC-Eight Equatorial Mount with its 10kg /  22lb instrument payload capacity for astrophotography is an excellent choice for many telescopes as well for the visual astronomer where the instrument payload capacity can be pushed much more, providing a solid very portable solution for those who want to use a larger telescope that would normally require a much larger equatorial platform.

Explore Scientific's PMC-Eight GOTO system can be controlled wirelessly or wired with a tablet or PC, with Windows 8.1 or 10, Android, Amazon Fire, or iOS, with a free app called ExploreStars. Tablet must be purchased separately.

The ExploreStars App controls any PMC-Eight mount by means of an intuitive graphical interface. Among other features ExploreStars offers both 2-star and 3-star alignment procedures, educational information and images of the more popular celestial objects, and a choice of over 80,000 objects for viewing.

The Explore Scientific EXOS2-GT with PMC-8 Electronics is a big leap forward in goto mount design and functionality. Based on the Exos2 German Equatorial mount architecture, Explore Scientific have added new belt driven dual stepper motors, the unique military grade PMC-8 wireless goto hardware (featuring 2 channel 8-CPU microprocessor), all controlled with the Explore Scientific ExploreStars Open Goto App, which runs on Windows PC, tablets and Smartphones. This delivers a mount which is whisper quiet in operation, with high positional accuracy, low periodic error, wireless control AND wireless ST4 protocol autoguiding functionality too - plus class leading electronic hardware.

Most of the serious amateur goto mounts on the market today offer controllers with single processors. The PMC-8 electronics are extremely robust in comparison. They include a 2-Channel Multi-Processor Micro-controller with 8 CPUs that run independently and are completely deterministic in their behaviour – hence the name PMC-8.

Within this multi-processor system is a 64 Kbyte EEPROM Non-Volatile Memory bank used to store parameters; a Wireless Ethernet 10/100 with full IP function which permits operation from anywhere using a browser, ASCOM, or APP over the web or serial port; and Non-Volatile Memory used to store user selected parameters.

The electronics also includes an Auto-Guide port (ST4 contact input) and features the only wireless ASCOM driver on the market. The belt driven system uses 2 timing pulleys (1-45 groove and 1-10 groove) with fibreglass reinforced neoprene belt, connected to high quality Nema11 bi-polar stepper motor (0.67 amps 12ncm). Precise ball bearings in both axes ensures minimal backlash at all nine possible tracking speeds.

This mount can be run from 12v mains supplies and field batteries (supplied separately), using 2.5mm centre positive jack leads. The mount head rests on a very tough and rigid stainless steel tripod with adjustable 2" legs from 26.8" to 42.5" and can support up to 10kg / 22 lbs. of equipment. 2x 4.5kg counterweights are supplied as standard.

Controlled by the class leading PMC-Eight wireless control system, this mount doesn't require a handset and will run off a modern Android device (minimum screen Size: 7-inches), Apple iPads (running iOS12+), or Windows 10 tablets and computers (please note: the app will not install on smaller phones or tablets). In addition to these packages, the PMC-8 is also fully ASCOM compliant and will connect to any ASCOM Standards Compliant POTH Client from Explore Scientific (either wired or wireless) to work with virtually any sky software that supports ASCOM. The Explore Stars control app can be downloaded from Android, Apple and Windows app stores and is a very intuitive piece of software, with the ability to use your device's GPS signal to download location and time/date data - no more entering info by hand. Explore Stars allows for simple setup with the click of a button. The ExploreStars OpenGoto® Software has the same basic functions as most goto mounts on the market today. ExploreStars is a free App downloadable from the Microsoft App store. The basic download includes a standard 2 star or 3 star alignment procedures, over 70,000 star database, the Messier Catalogue and Solar System objects. The software interface features a Classic four-button pattern for guiding, centring, moving and slewing on the touch screen of your tablet or phone. Pull-down menus open to offer the intuitive 2 star and 3 star alignment procedure, selection of the various catalogues, guided tours, the sync button, the park position, search feature and the coordinate input screen to enter RA and DEC coordinate information. Numerical key pad allows for selectable and user enterable GOTO speeds for slewing, centring and guiding rates. You can also set sidereal, king, lunar, solar, and user defined tracking rates.

What makes the ExploreStars OpenGoto® Software software different is that YOU can write your own code and import it into this software. Create a Messier challenge. Create a selectable list of objects you want to photograph and program that information into the software. With the ability to write your own code, you can create whatever your heart desires. Share it with the community of astronomers that are using this software.
In addition, this mount can be controlled by any ASCOM compliant software using the built-in wireless ASCOM driver. GPS-compatible and auto time / date settings are dependent on optional receiver on computer, tablet or phone.

Here are most of the ASCOM software packages available for use with the Explore Scientific EXOS2-GT / Losmandy G-11 with PMC-8 mounts: ACP; APT; AST / ATC & Ricerca (Omega Lab); AstroArt; AstroMB; Cartes du Ciel / Sky Chart; CCD AutoPilot; DeepSky; Deepsky Planner; DFM Engineering; Earth Centered Universe Pro; EasySky; Eye and Telescope; Project Pluto; Hallo Northern Sky; Maxim DL; MaxPoint; PinPoint Astrometric; Prism; Sequence Generator Pro; Sidereal Technology; The Sky; SkyMap Software; SkyTools 3; Star Atlas PRO; Sky Observer; StarryNight; Stellarium; Virtual Moon Atlas; and WorldWide Telescope.

To start using ExploreStars, download the free app and download the celestial data set that contains the astronomical catalogues, reference images, and reference text. This dataset can be found at http://www.explorestars.com/downloads.html

The Mount arrived and was assembled without looking at the instruction book ( old habits die hard). I downloaded Explore Stars to both my Android Tablet and Laptop and low and behold it connected first time. The Mount is quite in operation and tracking is very precise. The Polar scope is a joy to use(With a 90 degree adapter(Astro Essentials Right Angled Eyepiece for Polar Scopes)).It beats the “mickey mouse” Skywatcher illuminator hands down.
I next tested it with the ASIAIR Pro and found it performed faultlessly. This mount will be used with a variety of scopes and accessories the only problem I found that the excessive amount of Cloud, Rain and Wind that accompanied it curtailed further testing.
I purchased the Mount due to my Sywatcher EQ5 Dying ( Testing found the motherboard in the control boxed had clapped out and needs replacing) .The mount is light enough for me to move without developing a Hernia unlike my EQ6R pro which this mount seems as quite and precise albeit with lighter load capacity.

All in all an excellent purchase…Thanks FLO..even though the box contained Clouds.

I got this mount sometime ago, the idea was to have something light and easy to move around and it fitted the bill well, the legs are very good the only thing that lets this mount down is the PMC8, it was not an easy thing to set up and I had to do a lot of looking up to find how, the software does need to be updated, I found the sites CN and SGL very good, I now have it working with the serial port viva the ZWO asiair pro, I have used a SW ED72 and the Askar 72 with a ZWO colour camera and guide with good results although doing a polar alinement is not the easiest. I have given this mount 5 stars because once you have got over the PMC8 niggles it is a fine bit of kit. As always my thanks to the staff at FLO.

The mount arrived within 2 days in perfect condition. Looks to be a high quality piece of equipment. Have yet to use it as obviously it'll now be cloudy until at least the beginning of next year All in all, usual great service & great quality I always receive from FLO. Would highly recommend for all astronomy purchases.
