Optical Bench Test

FLO tests all Esprit telescopes before dispatch.

You can be confident your telescope will, from the outset, have well figured optics, negligible false colour and spherical aberration, and no astigmatism (the bane of any optical system!).

Star shapes will be round, not triangular, oval or egg-shaped!

Price includes a pre-dispatch optical bench test.

Sky-Watcher Professional Esprit 3-Element ED apochromatic refractors offer very high optical performance.

They are designed primarily for demanding astro-imagers wanting high-contrast images full of detail and zero detectable colour fringing, even on the brightest of objects!

Review of Sky-Watcher Esprit-150

"... the Esprit 150ED is an overall great performer offering excellent results. A price tag of £5,499 is not insignificant but is reasonable considering the premier optics and aperture and offers strong competition to the established refractors from Takahashi and TEC. The optics feature a high level of correction across the field and star images through all filters were tight and consistent thanks to its superb colour correction. The relatively lightweight construction means it will be suitable for use with all mid-range mounts and is certainly portable enough to carry out to darker skies."  Nik Szymanek writing for Astronomy Now magazine

An M48-fitting optically-matched doublet field flattener is also available to flatten the field and minimise aberration and distortion. The Esprit-150's imaging circle is 44mm when used with the field flattener.

The M48 fitting provides a large clear aperture to reduce halation. A precision thread ensures the triplet and doublet lens groups are precisely aligned on the optical axis perpendicular to the image.

The telescope's weight is 14.5 kg.

Looking good
27 March 2024  |

First I would like to send thanks to the FLO staff. You offer the best customer service in this business as far as I am concerned.
Got my 150ED a few weeks ago and had first test last night in terrible conditions one day after full Moon, windgusts up to 10 m/s and Northern lights.
I was a bit nervous as I have had two other apo's which stars have been elongated in the corners when shooting wiht my Asi2600mc, and was very happy to see that stars ar pin point all over.
It's a beast, long and heavy, but easy to balance on my CEM70 mount in my small observatory.
Worth to mention is that I had to add some extra felt in the tuberings as the rings are a tad too wide. Heard that this is a known problem with the 150, but difficult to know untill one gets the scope on the pier/tripod.

Sky-Watcher Esprit 150 ED PRO Triplet
20 March 2019  |

I got my Sky-Watcher Esprit 150 ED PRO Triplet second-hand but literally in "NEW" conditions, My first impression is WOW that is really a big telescope, the build quality is great and it feels solid and well constructed.
The focuser is very good as well and it handles my very heavy eyepieces (including my ES 30mm 82º) very nicely. Although this telescope is very heavy but I managed to fit it with my Skywatcher Skymax 180 Mak on my Skywatcher AZ-EQ6 GT Pro in Alt-Azimuth mode nicely and the mount handled both telescopes easily.
Under the stars: I tested the telescope couple of times, and I can confirm that I did not see absolutely any false colours whatsoever, last night I looked at the Moon through the telescope, I used different eyepieces (including my ES 14mm 100º, ES 30mm 82º, 8.8mm 82º, Tele Vue Delos 17.3mm 72º and 4.5mm 72º) and after I left the telescope nearly one hour outside to cool down, the Moon was absolutely breathtaking, the details that I can see were just incredible, the surface of the Moon was very very sharp and full of small details.
I compared the view of the Moon between the Esprit and my 180 Mak and I can easily confirm that the Esprit outperform the Mak which is very very good telescope when it comes to observe the Moon and the planets.
I took some images to near by buildings during daytime and I checked them in Photoshop to see if I can find any chromatic aberration, but again, nothing to be seen!
I didn't do any deep sky imaging so I can't say anything about how it would perform, but with the aperture and the colour-free view with very tight and small stars I'm expecting the telescope to perform very well indeed!
So happy the my Esprit, Highly recommended indeed!.

SW Esprit 150 First Impressions
01 June 2018  |

The scope saw first light for imaging in April and has produced the anticipated results. The light gathering capacity is particularly impressive with Ha imaging, with lots of detail being captured with just 1-2 hours integration. It is quite a heavy scope and really needs to be on a heavy duty mount ideally on a permenant set up. That hasn’t stopped me setting it up and taking it down for each session though, any opportunity to use it is too good to miss! If you want a large aperture, low maintenance scope for imaging, this is highly recommended.

Sky-Watcher at the top of their game
03 November 2016  |

It took a leap of faith to invest in this top of the range instrument from Sky-Watcher but I made a good call! Beautifully engineered with exquisitely figured optics, first light has not disappointed - the field of view is wonderfully flat with my KAF 8300 sensor which was a major reason for purchasing this particular telescope.
Although I ordered the FeatherTouch R & P focuser to go with it, I have to say that the OEM R & P focuser looks pretty good too.
A very pleasant surprise is how evenly illuminated the FOV is with this relatively large sensor with minimal apparent vignetting.
This is a hefty instrument with a relatively long focal length (1070mm with the field flattener in use) so it does require a substantial mount for imaging purposes.
