FLO Says: Don't be put off by it's low price. The 76mm (3") diameter Newtonian optics provide views that are brighter and clearer than the 60mm 'toy' telescopes available in department stores.

'International Year of Astronomy Special Edition'

The Sky-Watcher Heritage-76 was designed to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) and the 400th Anniversary of Galileo’s first telescope.

This is a functional optical instrument and an ideal gift for the younger astronomer aged 5-10 years.

The tube graphics symbolise Galileo and his conflict with the Catholic church. Galileo Galilei’s public championing of Copernicus’s theory of heliocentrism, which was contrary to the geocentric beliefs at the time, eventually led to his being denounced by the Roman Inquisition. He was subsequently tried, suspected of heresy, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Of course Galileo, 'The father of modern science' and 'The father of modern observational astronomy' was right.

Includes a 5x magnification finderscope for easy location of night sky objects. Also, the two supplied eyepieces have been upgraded to higher quality Super Modified Achromats for improved performance. The telescope accepts standard 1.25” accessories, so the magnification range can be extended using additional 1.25” eyepieces and/or a Barlow lens.

The uncomplicated, manually operated Dobsonian alt-azimuth mount is perfect for a telescope of this type. Comes fully assembled straight out of the box.

A great little mini telescope
09 February 2023  |

This is an ultra-portable desktop telescope that you can easily carry in one hand. You just sit it on a table outside at night and point it at the stars. It takes standard 1.25" eyepieces and comes with two excellent skywatcher eyepieces. The two eyepieces are much better than you normally get with any telescope, let alone a budget one like this. They alone come close to justifying the cost of the telescope.

However, with a scope this size, you do have to manage your expectations. It's great for a quick view of the stars or the moon, but for planets or double stars its use is limited. The short focal length means that very little of the field of view is fully in focus. The mirrors aren't great, so as well as focusing problems, there is also considerable chromatic aberation. I haven't used the finder scope, finding it too fiddly to align and awkward to see through.

With these limitations in mind, it's still a fun way to start looking at the sky, and start building your eyepiece collection.

Great for toe dipping
11 August 2020  |

The Skywatcher Heritage 76 is my first telescope, ordered on a whim after a night shift where I found myself repeatedly staring at the full moon.

Before I talk resolution, the telescope itself is a lovely thing to look at, it's small enough to sit comfortably on a sideboard and the colourful (but not in my view childish) design makes it worthwhile as a talking point alone.

I knew from other reviews that this telescope would not show me Saturn's rings in HD, but it did give me a pretty good look at the moon's surface on a clear night. I have also been able to find what I believe to be jupiter, as a point a few millimeters in diameter on the 10mm lens. This was as I expected and given the relative cheapness and fact that it was bought primarily to stare at the moon I am quite happy with it!

I am now considering a barlow and moon filter to get a little more out of it and then I might have to invest in something a little larger for the winter.

FL Optics were great to buy from and the telescope arrived quickly and in perfect condition, I'll be returning for any future purchases.

Great Introduction
21 May 2011  |

This was my first scope and it absolutely got me hooked. It is very easy to use and gives some great views of the moon. Even the brighter deep sky objects, like the Orion Nebula and the Andromeda Galaxy, give some great views in this little scope.

If your looking thinking of getting into astronomy but don't want to spend a fortune, look no further than this lovely little scope!
