Great Scope

I've had the ED80 now for nearly 8 years now, so long overdue for a quick review.

I bought it from FLO, after as always brilliant advice, this time from Steve.

I was looking to start into Astrophotography. It arrived as a xmas present from my wife 2 days after ordering, I cannot fault the service at FLO.

I started dabbling with astrophotography and was able to get some hugely satisfying shots of Andromeda, M42, various clusters etc, however, I quickly began to realise the faff of astrophotography wasn't really for me. But as a beginner to image taking, I can totally see why this scope and HEQ5pro mount is one of the best intro's to photography, solid and stable, great tracking capability and huge amounts of potential to grow with you as your skills improve, maybe one day I'll try again.

So I started using it for visual only. There is something so hugely satisfying having a small refractor that is light, has great optics, and is perfect for a quick grab and sweeping through star fields. The pin point stars are beautiful.

At a small aperture of just 80mm, yes it does lack light grasp, but, this is still a lovely scope and you will see plenty of wonders in the night sky, nebula and galaxies will be small smudges, but there was something immensely impressive viewing M81 and M82 together in the same field of view amongst the stars. Sometimes it's not about seeing detail, but understanding what you're looking at set amongst the back drop of space.

So for me, coupled with an EQ3 mount, this turned into an ideal grab and go scope for visual.

ED80 Delight

I purchased this at Astrofest 2014 as a compete set up and used it properly last night. I was delighted to be able to gain my first image of M42 and it wasn't half bad. The instructions for the mount are worthless but there is a great deal of support on the net. Once you know what you're doing with it, it's premium product all the way. I purchased the right angle finder as you need to be a gymnast to use it on some orientations. Over all, I am overjoyed and looking forward to many nights quality imaging.
