Sturdy and easy to use

I bought this because I wanted ta 'grab-and-go set up that I would be able to move to different parts of the garden for best views of various celestial objects (the mount has a Skywatcher 120T startravel with crayford upgrade fitted). Previously I used an equitorial mount but by the time I moved it, stopped the telescope tube from flopping about in transit like a new-born babies head, re-aligned and set it back up, the view I had been chasing would have disappeared and I would have to trudge (now in a seriously bad temper) back to the garage with all the gear. But no more! Now I can literally 'Grab and Go", and in less than five minutes be stargazing. Moving the set up could not be easier. The Alt/Az mount is stable and secure and although the tripod set up is lightweight it provides a secure, and largely vibration free platform (any wobbles disappear in a second or so). The clever mount makes even the highest altitude targets easily attainable and it's quick and easy to organise is comfortable viewing experience.
My only niggle is that the azimuth axis has some backlash in it (the altitude axis has non), but for the price together with its other virtues this is only a small point - I am sure I ought to be able to fine-tune this out when I get a few minutes.
So: a really good no nonsense mount that provides secure, and lightweight mounting. One that adds considerably to the enjoyment of 'grab and go' stargazing.

Sky-Watcher AZ5 Deluxe Alt-Azimuth Astronomy Mount

Very impressed with the AZ5 mount head, much larger and more robust than I expected, and allows use on my series 5 Gitzo tripod. The adjustment of Alt and Azimuth is extremely fine and positive, which is excellent. My first use of First Light Optics, and I'm impressed by the website and service, plus pricing is competitive.

Solid mount, great quality, simple and very easy to use. I can use it with my photograph tripod, and that's great.

Sky-Watcher AZ5 Deluxe Alt-Azimuth Mount.

Bought with the aluminium tripod as an upgrade for the shaky mount supplied with my 102mm refractor. I wanted a stable mount with tracking controls while avoiding the complications of polar aligning or high tec go-to mounts. This mount ticks all of the boxes for my grab and go approach. After fitting tube rings and dovetail bar I set everything up and itís rock solid with no slack play in the movements at all. Itís a quality piece of kit well worth the cost and received within 2 days.

S-W AZ5 Mount.

I bought this mount to peremit me to visit other areas of
Cumbria's dark skies using my smaller instruments.
My ED 80 Apo for instance rarely got a look at the skies.
My observatory scope, the MN190 Is adorned with accessories so removing it to
accommodate the ED80 Is a daunting task, so I renage from that.
The AZ Is a great little mount, and Ideally suited to grab and go astronomy with smaller instruments.
Thoroughly recommended for the the Grab and Go jobs.
Barkis.

Az5.The little strong man

I asked for advice before buying this lovely little mount on whether I could mount my SW Explorer 200p on it , the advice was mixed to say the least , but I decided to buy it . I had already purchased an EQ5 adapter to enable use of the EQ5 tripod with the mount .
So , after placing my order with FLO the mount arrived 23 hours later !!!! Brilliant ! I was able to use the mount with my 200p the next night . The manual said that the mount can indeed take 9kgs if you use a sturdy tripod . And that seemed to be the case . Everything was firm and steady , just the occasional vibration which settled down very quickly . All in all a really lovely smooth mount which negates the need for an elongated set up time .
I must also add that , once again FLO delivered .. in advice and speed and a genuine enthusiasm to help . Although I work very close to a rival company in Cambridgeshire I actually prefer to buy my gear through FLO . Thank you

Az5 mount

Bought this for a skywatcher 3/8 stainless steel tripod. Have tried it with a st120. 5.6kg and handled the weight well. The short knobs are just fine for me but it has longer flexible knobs in the package for longer otas. The gears have a clutch system that can be adjusted for slip for fast motion to targets and then lock up and use slow motion controls. I mostly keep the azimuth unlocked and use the altitude knob only to track targets. There is 2 positions that the arm can be adjusted. I keep it in the more vertical position to keep weight nearer centre of tripod. FLO parcel was well packaged and they delivered quickly to Northern Ireland using DHL👍

Great Mount, here are some Cons and Pros but this is a super piece of gear I bought for my nephew. I did a full review on the Actual Astronomy Podcast Episode #68 that drops on Nov. 24th.
https://actualastronomy.podbean.com/

Cons:
Weird Spider web of polystyreneÖ.hopefully itís not in the gearsÖ.
Clutch - seems either engaged or not, I prefer the Tak lapides that allows precise setting depending on what you re doing,,,,but the AZ5 may work better for beginners in this regard since you just turn the clutch a little and know itís not movingÖ.with the clutch not engaged if you take a really heavy eyepiece out it can nosedive or move too much.
Sourcing / lack of availability - So youíd have to do a custom order here in Can/Us or order from UK or EU like I did. Y

Pros:
Rock Solid! No shakes super solid, was easy to track at 85x. So this mount meets that requirement of making sure a beginner wonít suffer from shaking.
Pointing Ease: Super Smooth, works perfectly with the 80mm f5. Totally intuitive, see something point it and itís close enough.
Pro- Can use on any photographic tripod!
Look / Feel: wow the tripod / mount / scope looks amazing, it looks like a kit all color co-ordinated Ö.

AZ5 mount for Heritage 150p
Thursday, 23 July 2020  |

This mount is VERY stable on the steel SW tripod (which is a tad larger and heavier than I anticipated!). It's solid and for the most part very smooth to use, particularly in the alt slo mo. However neither clutch allows me to lock the mount, and the clutch has to be very tight for azimuth slo mo to engage anticlockwise. I'm sure I'll get used to it, and it's lovely to use when set up.

Bought this AZ5. Without the tripod as I had a very sturdy manfrotto tripod that fitted.... It is an excellent mount for the price.. Well made solid.. Stylish.. Mount on its own takes 9kg..!!!!!.....no problem with the Explorer 130PDS I purchased with it..
Great combo..... 👍
