I took an old Celestron Advanced GT apart because something in the motors or control boards wasn't working. I bought this set and it fit the Celestron CG-5 perfectly, and looks handsome in black on black. The wires and connectors in this set are better than the telephone jack like connectors on the Celestron kit. The motors spin up and whirr when it slews, sounds better than the coffee grinder sounds that used to come out of the Celestron motors. This set works perfectly with the Lynx EQDirect cable I also got here from FLO. It's a good set, worth the price so far.
I received the kit- no problem except for the instructions. These tell you how to wire the units together but very little about what you have to pull apart and which screws fit where. I have upgraded several mounts for other astronomers so it wasn't a problem for me but may be for someone who doesn't know how it is supposed to go together. Anyway, testing went OK first time and everything worked OK. The only question I have is why do the EQ5 motors require 2.5 Amps when slewing but the EQ6 motors only 1.7 Amps?
I have been wating for it for almost 2 weeks to order upgrade kit And it doesnt dispointed at all
I have been using manually my EQ-5 for almost a year. I decided to upgrade with this kit and it was totally worth it. Great service from FLO. Arrived on time and in good condition. The instructions included are on how to configure the SYNSCAN hand controller. Only thing missing is a complete set of instructions on how to install on the mount, which i later found on the original skywatcher website
You really don't need to be a rocket scientist to install this system. Its fairly intuitive and only required about half an hour to fit. The motors and drive gears appear to be of good quality. It requires some lubrication which was included in the package. The operating instructions are not simple, but as with anything Astronomy related, it requires time and practice to set up along with frequent fine tuning when in operation. Great service from FLO too. Thanks!
Received order promptly direct from supplier ( optical vision) found security seal on box cut through unable to check contended as no contact list supplied but all parts appear to be there,no installation instructions supplied as I am not an engineer or a diy person still have not been able to fit the kit on my new EQ5.Still donít know if it works ok been on internet installation videos make no sense to me ( might be a moron ) very disappointed with this purchase for £300.00 I was expecting a bit more information being supplied by Skywatcher or Retailer having spent about £2000.00 over the last year getting together kit for my forthcoming retirement as this is going to be my main hobby not that pleased at the moment with this kit.
Tis true, the fitting instructions are non existent but a bit of common sense, patience and a vague understanding of how a gear works and it's pretty obvious what to do.Took me about 1 hour to go from sealed box to switch on and was pretty pleased with myself.Tried slewing the Dec motor and it worked perfectly first time. However when I tried the RA it moved a little then cut out, powered down and rechecked everything, tried again and same happened. 3rd attempt I took the cover off and removed the brass gear expecting the motor to work and for the problem to be the gears binding but when I tried again I saw a little spark from the back of the PCB and it cut out again. At this point I thought about sending it back with no further investigation but decided to remove the PCB from its mount and see if it was anything obvious. It was, the was a loose bit of solder floating around in the gap between the motor and PCB causing a short circuit. Removed it and rebuild and everything seems to be working fine now but Im a pit upset with that given the price of this kit.Not tried it outdoors yet as I've literally just finished building it but am looking forward to doing so first time is clear and dark enough.
The kit itself was ok. All parts present, but there wasn't a parts list so, I didn't know this until completing the install. The so called installation instructions were quite frankly a joke as they skipped all relevent details about which parts fitted where. I just had to figure it out myself. Supplied screws for the main body housing proved to be too short.
I purchased this for an old Vixen Super Polaris mount. I fully expected to have to modify this somewhat to fit this older mount but that was not the case. My mount has the 4 setscrew style to mount the Dec and ra motors. All I needed to do was make a small plate that screwed to the bottom of the upgrade motors. The plate is then held with the 4 setscrews. I have not had weather to test it yet but everything seems as it should work as expected. Will update once I test it.
