Fantastic telescope
25 January 2019  |

Absolutely brilliant, i would say that this telescope is beginner to mid-range having seen it's capabilities.
The only improvement i'd make to the SLT127 is to have a sturdier mount, having said this, the mount as it is serves it's purpose well.
The optics are arguably the most important feature of a telescope, and the optics with this telescope is of very high quality. I would go as far to say that when it comes to planetary views, the SLT127 can provide images as good as an 8 inch or 10 inch aperture telescope (though aperture does not really matter as much as focal length for planetary views, i mention it as the common perception is bigger is better). With this telescope i have seen the following: Excellent lunar views; fantastic details. Jupiter: cloud belts and festoons, the Great Red Spot and transit shadows of the four visible moons, Saturn and the Cassini division within the rings, Titan. Have also enjoyed fantastic views of Orion Nebula and Pleiades.
Sun filters are available for this telescope as well as t-ring for DLSR cameras and astro photography!

Great telescope for beginner.

This is my first telescope (apart from a brief loan of a similar one) and I expect it will be some time before I'm looking to upgrade.
There are comprehensive instructions in the manual, but the quick start up guide is sufficient to get you searching the stars.
The first thing I looked at was Jupiter, and I could clearly see the bands of clouds and 4 of it's moons.
I'm looking forward to finding a better place to use the scope than my back garden, living in a large city is bad enough, but the security lights around the school behind my house cause a lot of light pollution.

Great scope, adequate mount
18 January 2012  |

I bought this as my first telescope a little over 6 months ago and have been very pleased with the objects it has allowed me observe.

Views of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars have all been great and surfing down the line between night and day on the moon and shows a plenty of detail and relief. It has also allowed me to view many brighter deep space objects such as globular clusters from under fairly heavily light polluted skies.

Once properly aligned the tracking works well and objects can be found reasonably easily with the goto functionality, although you'll want to use the 25mm EP when moving to a new target to increase the chance of it being in the field of view when you get there.

I purchased an external 12v power supply and one of the skytron power cables also sold here to go with it and have used it for hours at a time without issue.

The tripod is reasonably steady, but probably the weakest part of the package. However there are quite a few easy things you can do to increase it's stability when observing.

The whole setup is quite easy to store as, as the OTA fits easily into something the size of a regular toolbox and the tripod folds up.

I can't comment on it's uses for Astro Photography though as I'm purely a visual observer so far.

Possibly the best entry-mid level goto telescope money can buy
22 December 2011  |

Bought this as my second telescope, my first being a basic skywatcher 130p. I can honestly this telescope provides the best value for the price of all the other scopes i have looked into while making the decision of what to go for. The nexstar go to system is simple and easy to use and very easy to align. The red dot finder scope is extremely accurate and easy to align. The eyepieces supplied are of good quality. Easy brings up jupiters main bands even from close to a city centre without any filters for light pollution. Was also surprised to be able to see M57 with some detail from the same location. All in all a fantastic scope with no complaints although the first bit to get upgraded will be the tripod. For normal viewing this is fine and sturdy enough but when making the step into astrophotography a stable one may be necessary.
