Optical Bench Test

At FLO we check all SharpStar refractor telescopes on our optical bench before dispatch.

This ensures you can be confident your telescope will, from the outset, have well-figured optics, negligible false colour and spherical aberration, and no astigmatism (the bane of any optical system!). Star shapes will be round, not triangular, oval or egg-shaped!

SharpStar 76EDPH f/5.5 Triplet ED APO Telescope

The Sharpstar 76 EDPH scope features a 76mm air-spaced triplet objective with an ED glass element for excellent colour correction, contrast, and image sharpness. With a focal ratio of f/5.5, the scope measures just 333mm in length with its dew shield retracted and weighs just 2.9kg. It’s ideal for field use and travel. With a focal length of 418mm when used with the optional Sharpstar 2.5" Flattener the 76EDPH delivers tack-sharp stars across a 5 degree X 3.3 degree field with a full-frame camera.

The optics are multi coated on all surfaces to reduce internal reflections and maximise light transmission.

The superb optics of this refractor are matched by the quality of its mechanics. Cosmetically the red CNC trim and carrying handle and the white gloss tube give this scope a  premium appearance to match the optics and mechanics.

The 76 EDPH feature a dual-speed 10:1 rack-and-pinion focuser with 60mm of travel that has the strength to hold heavy cameras and imaging accessories without slipping or tilting.

The optional 0.8x focal reducer/field flattener for the 76EDPH delivers a very fast focal ratio of f/4.5 and a focal length of 334mm. The reducer delivers excellent image quality across a full-frame sensor with a field of view of approx 6 x 4 degrees.

The included tube rings feature a hollow design and streamlined handle and perfectly match the cosmetic quality of the telescope. They also allow the attachment of other accessories - for example a guidescope.

The 76EDPH package also contains a Vixen-compatible dovetail plate which features a 1/4" photo thread in the centre that allows the scope to be mounted on a tripod for terrestrial observing and nature photography.

Impressive Baby Refractor
15 February 2021  |

I am very impressed with this little telescope. It replaces a WO FLT-98 and before that an APM 100/800. I haven't had a clear night when I could get it out to star test but I have used it during the day both visually and photographically and it is at least the equal of the FLT-98 - probably better for chromatic aberration as I cannot detect any false colour in the images I took. In fact any aberrations were beneath the seeing threshold or beneath the image processing artefacts from my camera in the photos I took. This was not true of the apo doublet I have tested a WO ZS 70. It fits nicely in my Tamrac camera backpack alongside an AZ-GTi mount for an airline portable setup.
