Optical Tube Assembly

The new Skywatcher Explorer-250P DS has the same superb parabolic primary mirror as the original Explorer-250P but features a 1.25"/2" Dual-Speed 10:1 ratio focuser for enhanced focus control and a shorter tube length with the secondary mirror positioned closer to the primary mirror for more convenient prime-focus photography.

A DSLR camera can be fitted directly to the focuser's T-thread, using only a T-Ring, but for best results we recommend you also use a Coma Corrector. (When using a Coma Corrector, you will need an M48 Ring to suit your camera).

This thing is a light bucket, I had been doing some astrophotography temporarily using a skywatcher 50ED when I realised that the Celestron 130EQ doesnt have the range of focus to work with a camera, I had some minor success with long exposures to get some detail of the Orion nebula.
My first attempt with the 250PDS & guiding I didnt really know what I was doing and I thought I had a number of 2 minute long exposures, I turns out I messed it right up and what I had was a bunch of 1 second exposures. Those 1 second exposures showed a lot more detail than anything else I had been able to get just due to the amount of light it collects.
It is a big heavy monster to move around but with the image quality I am getting I dont mind.
The construction is solid but the instructions that come with it are totally useless & I havent tried the finder scope that comes with it as I have a 50ED.
Very pleased with the scope and the service from FLO

Great service and speedy delivery from FLO, I haven't used the scope yet as I am making a Dob mount for it but it looks a great piece of kit, and I cant wait until its up and running.

Please add the two numbers

Q1. What is the weight please?

The weight is 14.4 kg

Q2. How important is a coma corrector for imaging?

A coma corrector 'flattens out' the optics which greatly improves the star shapes away from the centre of your images.

If you are using say a planetary camera with a small sensor you don't need a coma corrector. However, if you are using a large sensor camera such as a DLSR then a coma corrector does provide a big improvement in image quality.

We recommend the following coma correctors for f/5 Newtonians:

Q3. Is the mirror made from Pyrex glass.

We are often asked this question. Sky-Watcher do not use Pyrex glass for their mirrors.
They used to (many years ago), but they now use an alternate low-expansion glass. There is no change in performance.
Some retailers still mistakenly use the old 'px' (px for Pyrex) product name. We suspect this is what is causing confusion.

Q4. Does it come with a 2" to 1.25" adapter?

Yes, the 2" focuser comes with a 2" to 1.25" adapter included for use with 1.25" accessories.
