Q1. Can this tripod be used with binoculars, spotting scopes and DSLR's out of the box?

Yes, providing your equipment has standard tripod attachment, the tripod is ready to go. The DSLR will certainly fit, the Binoculars if they have a direct tripod attachemnt method or you have a suitable bracket. Spotting Telescopes do normally have a suitable tripod mount.

My 1st decent photo tripod

Well, as the title says it is my first decent quality tripod so I'm not sure if my expectations differ having only used gear from the cheaper end of the scale.

1st thing I noticed was the height - fully extended with the centre post all the way up it was 187cm to the plate. That's plenty enough for me at 6ft to use binoculars on for astronomy. It was steadier than I expected at that height too.

Most of my use has been lower, however, with the centre pole down and just the top leg extensions out. In this configuration it is great with my Megrez 88 on it used in a sitting position or for the kids to look through with the diagonal turned to the side for the younger ones (9 year olds).

The Megrez without accessories weighs in around 3.4kg. With the 2" diagonal and the heaviest EP I used being a Meade Series 5000 SWA it must have been a little over it's stated capacity of 3.6kg. Even so there was no sign of anything slipping and even with the scope rear end heavy and pointing up it locked off nicely with no apparent movement.

Vibration could be an issue when fully extended and using high magnifications (using a my 7mm Nagler) it was noticeable that the vibration took a few seconds to damp out after touching the tube but given what I was asking of it I don't think that's an issue.

I bought this to take away camping with the family as the CG5 + 2 inch steel tripod + counterweights + power tank is far too bulky and this way I also get a decent tripod for my DSLR. This suits my purpose perfectly and I look forward to many evenings in fields, in the middle of nowhere, with it.

All in all very pleased.

Not quite what I expected
Monday, 23 May 2011  |

I have to say I was a little bit disappointed in my WO Tripod. Everything else I have had from Williams had a quality fit and finish but this wasn't to that standard.

The legs are pretty flimsy and the locking mechanism isn't great. I had a couple of near misses with heavy camera equipment and a leg sliding down.

I think there are better options at this price point.
