IDAS HEUIB-II UV/IR Blocking Filter

The IDAS HEUIB-II (H-alpha Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter is designed for enhanced spectrum DSLR's and one-shot colour CCD astronomical cameras.

Besides removing the IR and UV ends of the spectrum which are often out of focus in refractive optics, it isolates the common H-alpha line relative to the surrounding extreme red end of the spectrum, making it easy to bring out the faint H-alpha emission nebulosity of astronomical photos, yet retain the background colour balance of broadband photos.

The comparison shots shown below were taken with an enhanced Canon 6DH using a standard Canon UV/IR blocking filter and an IDAS HEUIB-II filter. These show a clear difference both in the background sky colour balance and the contrast of H-alpha nebulosity in the extremely faint object IC1396. Note the good background colour balance as shown in the histograms of the individual colour channels of the HEUIB-II filtered image.

The HEUIB-II is a UV/IR-cut filter enhanced for shooting H-alpha nebulae at the wave length of 656.3nm.
This will reduce the interference from the red end spectrum associated with regular astronomical IR-cut filters such as UIBAR-III, and as a result enhance the wave length of H-alpha nebulae. Even in comparison with our conventional HEUIB filter, HEUIB-II has less interference from the red end spectrum as a result of the increase in the red spectrum suppression range. Thus, the image of the nebula in the H-alpha region will be enhanced.

The HEUIB-II filter utilises the IGAD (ion-Gun AssistDeposition) coating technology which has been applied to our regular LPS-P2 and LPS-V4 series. The IGAD technology densifies the multi-layers - the heart of interference filters - resulting in physical properties that cannot be obtained from the conventional multi-layers.

  • 1) Highly durable thin layers of which hardness equals to quartz glasses. Tremendously improved adherence between the substrate and the multi-layers set.
  • 2) Absolutely almost no aging variation in optical spectral characteristics due to temperature and humidity change as far as used in the regular human living environments.

Please Note: This product is an interference filter.  Its spectrum characteristics will be subject to the incidence of incoming light.  Please read the following instructions for correct use.

When the HEUIB-II is placed before the lens Use a lens having the light incidence angle of 17 degrees or lower (field angle of 34 degrees or lower).

When the HEUIB-II is placed between the lens and camera.

When your camera is equipped with an APS-C image sensor and uses a lens with a *back focal distance of 40mm or greater and F value of two or faster, it is possible to keep the incidence angle below 20 degrees where the maximum averaged incidence angle of the incoming light ray against the filter can be held within about 17 degrees. Under the conditions of the above mentioned camera, there will be almost no field angle requirements for the lens to be used.
