Vixen LVW eyepiece reviews:

“Among the best values in quality wideangle eyepieces are the Lanthanum Superwides, made by Vixen of Japan. Each features 20mm of eye relief – an added bonus.”
The Backyard Astronomer's Guide revised edition, p.73

“Consider the Vixen Lanthanum Superwides… The most pleasant surprise is that they show sharp, contrasty views across nearly the entire field, even through fast-focal-ratio instruments. The 17-mm Lanthanum Superwide, for instance, has now become one of my most-used eyepieces with my 18-inch f/4.5 reflector.”
Star Ware 3rd edition 2002, p.196

Vixen LVW 42 mm eyepiece

The eyepiece was delivered promptly and with First Light Optics' usual high standard of service. The eyepiece (fitted to a Celestron CPC1100) gives sharp images and is very comfortable to use with its generous eye relief. It is every bit a match for the Tele Vue Panoptic 41 mm (which I have previously owned) at half the price and half the weight. It's s shame that Vixen seem no longer to be making this excellent accessory.

42mm LVW

" With 42mm focal length and 72 FOV, the 42mm Vixen LVW gives a wider true field of view than any other 2" commercially available eyepiece I know of - over 11% larger than the 40mm Aero.

I was skeptical that the LVW could fit in a FOV this wide as the field stop is only 0.5mm smaller than a 2" barrel!

However, on receipt of the eyepiece, the apparent FOV is noticeably larger than 70, so the AFOV statement seems to be correct, for a start. Looking in from the barrel, it's obvious that they have made it as thin as possible, but stability does not seem to be compromised. However, inserting 2" filters shows that the filter thread is very loose, and some filters may be in danger of falling off! Perhaps Vixen has done this deliberately to allow a larger true field, but users should be aware of this when using filters.

The build quality on this eyepiece is very good, and it has a solid feel, yet is quite light at 530 grams, and fairly small for a 2" eyepiece. It also has a large rubber grip and a flexible rubber eye guard, just the right length to facilitate the very usable 20mm eye relief. On the barrel is a sharply cut, deep and narrow safety undercut. This isn't my preferred style of undercut.

Looking through the LVW at a straight roof and moving it across the field, I noticed significant pincushion distortion. This can be annoying when sweeping across star fields, but for general observing is not of much consequence. The centre of the field was very sharp and showed excellent contrast. However, sharpness fell away significantly in the outer 10-15% of the field of view, which I would say is not such good performance at f/7.5. It would likely improve in a slower telescope.

In summary, the 42mm LVW is a very well-made eyepiece with an exceptionally large true field of view, and would make an excellent minimum magnification eyepiece for longer focal length telescopes.
