Optical Bench Test

FLO tests all William Optics triplet refractor telescopes before dispatch.

You can be confident your telescope will, from the outset, have well figured optics, negligible false colour and spherical aberration, and no astigmatism (the bane of any optical system!).

Star shapes will be round, not triangular, oval or egg-shaped!

Latest Model (2021) - Price includes a pre-dispatch optical bench test.

Now includes new CNC-machined handle/bar that enables you to slide a William Optics Uniguider directly into the handle (no need for Guide-Rings).

Latest model with 3.3-inch Rack and Pinion focuser featuring a turn/click to lock eyepiece holder, a new central lens element and new steel lens cell.

The William Optics FLT 132 features a triplet objective with Ohara FPL53 glass for the ED element and a new improved central element that provides superior contrast when compared to the original design. A new robust steel lens cell holds the optic securely and precisely at very low temperatures without fear of the cell pinching.

Fitted with William Optic's new upgraded dual-speed 3.3" Rack and Pinion focuser with a smoother action and no image shifting with a capacity of up to 6.8kg /15lb. (Can also be supplied with Feathertouch 3.5" focuser & Rotolock).

Includes William Optics Bahtinov Mask Cover, CNC carry bar, new guiding rings, new Losmandy-style dovetail plate and high quality soft carry case.

A truly beautiful telescope. The overall build quality & finish is impossible to fault (as you’d expect from any WO product). Although I’ve only used this scope twice since purchase, I’ve immediately realised the optics are razor sharp & superior to both my previous refractors (both were doublets). This telescope really is monster sized. The focus tube is also monster sized & clearly designed for ultra stable imaging. I bought the rack & pinion focuser version & it works beautifully with a ZWO EAF. This focuser required me to set my auto-focuser direction to reverse in the software settings. I also purchased the 0.72 reducer/ flattener & although the flattener price may appear expensive, you will see why when you purchase one as the flattener is also monster sized. It’s nearly as big as a Christmas pudding !
I bought the telescope to permanently fit into a medium sized observatory (6’ x 6’) & the telescope with imaging system attached only just fits with an inch clearance behind the main camera. My pier centreline is distanced 26” from the north wall so please check you’ve got enough room for this scope
I don’t know if I’d recommend this sized scope for regular setting up in your garden due to it’s size & weight.
My EQ6 R Pro can handle & guide this scope perfectly. I’ve fitted a 3rd 5kg counter weight to avoid use of the extension bar
Overall, I’m 100% delighted with this scope & sure to purchase the other x1 field flattener soon to boost the focal length for planetary & galaxy work

Williams Optics 132
06 May 2020  |

This is an exceptional piece of kit. I was already familiar with a previous incarnation we bought for a school observatory, and all of the changes made to the new version make the users experience easier. This means more time is spent viewing and photographing. In Britain viewing quality is rarely better than 1", similar to the limit of resolution of this telescope, particularly with the addition of a full frame DSLR. Like much of the product range sold to amateur astronomers the instructions and manuals are written for experienced users,. New innovations such as the Lens cap with the focussing mask are often missing instructional details such as access to the mask was unscrewing part of the lid to gain access to it rather than pull apart. This is not unique to Williams Optics but they do rely too much on a collection of less than satisfactory on line users for help.. So excellent product showing a superior set of innovations that makes experience of astronomy easier and simpler, but the experience could be better if this innovation was documented better. Certainly overall it is excellent value for money.
