Latest MK3 model with integrated USB2 hub, air socket for desiccant and screwed front cover.

ZWO are well known for their lunar, solar and planetary imaging cameras but this new model, with it’s large (4/3” diagonal) cooled sensor, is aimed at deep-sky imagers.

It is the shift from CCD to CMOS that most interests us.

Imaging with CMOS will probably require a different approach, tests suggest more frames / shorter exposures work better than less frames / longer exposures. This takes advantage of the CMOS sensor's very low read noise and stacking more frames suits the type of data CMOS sensors produce (12 or 14-bit, rather than the 16-bit we are used to).

From a practical point of view the ASI1600’s large sensor means those using 1.25” filters will need to mount them as close to the sensor as possible. Flat frames can be used to even out uneven illumination at the frame edges.

Includes an M42 extender ring, when removed shortens the back focus distance to only 6.5mm.

great camera

Well built and sturdy, the integrated USB hub keeps cable tangle down.
This is a very fast camera v my old CCD allowing better quality LRGB imaging in just one hour; used to be 1hr 30 mins and not as good quality images.
When running 1s - 5s imaging vertical banding appears which dark frames do not fully remove. 30s images are better and show no banding and very limited amp glow which darks will deal with.
When I bought this camera there was almost no information about narrowband imaging so I was concerned this would be an issue. Shouldn't have worried 11x2 min exposures of M101 shows good H alpha detail in the outer arms.
After much experimenting gain 30, offset 10 gives superb results with 30s subs LRGB and 2min subs narrow band.
Only disadvantage is 2x2 binning only supports 10bit output so software binning is a must.
Must buy a bigger hard disk; 230 files = approx. 4.5GB
As an experienced deep sky imager I would recommend this camera every time at this price point.
