Dave says

"I love how this camera's high sensitivity reveals faint deep sky detail.

And no amp glow means new astrophotographers can make images without dark frames, simplifying their post-processing, before progressing further."

About this product

Model:  zwo_asi_533_mm_pro
Part Number:  ZWO ASI533MM-P

Features Sony's highly sensitive 9MP IMX533 sensor, 2-stage TEC cooling and no Amp Glow!

The ASI533MM PRO features Sony’s latest back-illuminated IMX533CLK-D sensor, with a square (15.97mm diagonal) 9.07MP format. This sensor is ideal for astrophotography and is, essentially, the monochrome equivalent of the very successful ASI 533MC-Pro.

As you would expect, this latest generation camera retains the key features of the ASI183 and ASI533 MC Pro cameras, such as an attractive QE figure, high frame rate along with other excellent characteristics of the ASI183/ASI533 MC Pro cameras, including new and improved features such as zero amp glow, extreme low readout noise (as low as 1.0e), 3.76 microns pixel size and an improved 2 stage TEC cooler giving enhanced cooling capabilities.

The IMX533 is a 9MP CMOS image sensor with a square format and 3.76 um pixel size, capable of producing frames at 20 frames/sec in 14-bit mode.

Read-out noise is as low as 1.0e, making it comparable to SCMOS or EMCCD sensors and highly suitable for high-definition, low-noise imaging.

All ZWO cameras include a 2-year warranty.

IMX533 backlit sensor

Sony’s back-illuminated CMOS image sensor improves sensitivity and noise reduction – the key factors to enhancing image quality, while radically realigning their fundamental pixel structure from front-illumination to back-illumination. It has retained the advantages of CMOS image sensors, such as low power consumption and high-speed operation.

With a conventional front-illumination structure, the metal wiring and transistors on the silicon substrate surface that form the sensor’s light-sensitive area (photo-diode) impede photon gathering carried out by the on-chip lens. A back-illuminated structure minimises the degradation of sensitivity to optical angle response while also increasing the amount of light that enters each pixel due to the lack of obstacles, such as metal wiring and transistors that have been moved to the reverse of the silicon substrate.

Sony has newly developed a unique photo-diode structure and on-chip lens optimised for back-illuminated structures, that achieves a higher sensitivity and a lower random noise without light by reducing noise, dark current and defect pixels compared to the conventional front-illuminated structure.

DDR Memory Buffer

ZWO Pro cameras feature a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer to enable data transfer stability and reduced amp-glow caused by the slow data transfer speed when using a USB 2.0 port.

Great starting point
24 April 2023  |

This camera is a great starting point for Astrophotography. Whether it is the Mono or Colour version, it is a pleasure to deal with and calibration is easy with consistent calibration files. I have had some awesome photos over the last 6 months with this camera and a William Optics GT81 scope. I will never go back to a DSLR now.
The next step will be a 2600 size sensor for more sky in each shot!

Absolute weapon
12 March 2023  |

Having used a dslr previously, this camera is in a different league all together. It does exactly what’s expected. The shift to mono has been a slightly steep learning curve but I’m loving it. Stick an Ha filter in front of it and just wow!
Darks and bias now done during the day ( or cloudy nights)
Square sensor also makes framing easier. Well worth the purchase price and FLO are great!
