Mini Pier

This product is well made and sturdy and comes with two new Az hex bolts and North alignment peg. There are no assembly instructions with the pier extension. Though assembly should be straight forward it wasnt for me, hence the 4 stars.

Ioptron Mini Pier

Purchased as my refractor was hitting the mount when it was doing the meridian flip. This has sorted it out and also has the bonus of seating my scope higher which makes it more comfortable for me during polar alignment. Delivery was next day and the pier is a nice solid piece of kit. My only niggle is that I needed mole grips on the allen key to unlock the screws keeping the two sections together so I could incorporate the add on extension as they were extremely tight. Really happy with how it all works.

Lightweight yet sturdy enough

Once installed it's a firm fixture and does its job very well.

My iOptron HAE29 goes on top, my iOptron 1.5" tripod goes underneath. This one:

It has become a permanent fixture rather than the occasional accessory.

I switch between two scope for solar viewing; a short William Optics Zenithstar 80mm and a long old blue Skywatcher 150 f8 refractor.
The latter caused me to almost be on my knees when viewing at high noon. This mini pier cures that, and stops the scope crashing into the garden table when parking the scope end of day. Yes that happened - oops.

One of the top mounting holes was drilled slightly too far away from center by about 2mm. I had to sand down the neck of the fixing bolt to offset this error, else the mount would not mate at all.
A slight niggle but once sorted it works perfectly. For that it gets 4 stars.

I'd still recommend this. It adds very little weight to my "grab and go" backyard hobby.

8" mini pier required some work to fit CEM26 1.75" LiteRoc Tripod

Super fast delivery from FLO via DPD, so no complaints there!

However, I have dropped my rating down to 4 stars because of the following issues:

Once I had assembled the 8" version of the mini pier, I had problems getting the central hole in its base to slide over the central peg of the CEM 26 tripod head (N.B. the hole to accommodate the alignment peg had plenty of leeway). The hole in the base had been made a fraction of a millimetre too small and it would jam fast on the central peg after pushing it down just a couple of mm. I had to spend a good half hour carefully reaming out the hole in the base with a piece of emery paper wrapped around a drill bit before it would slide over the pin without jamming - not something I would expect to have to do for an item that cost the best part of £100!

The other thing to be aware of is that iOptron do not provided any Allen keys. You will need to have a 6mm Allen key in order to assemble the 8" version of the pier and also a 5mm Allen key to bolt the base of the pier to the tripod head (this applies to both the 5" and 8" versions) - why they didn't use bolts that accept a 4mm Allen key like those supplied with the original mount beats me? Luckily I had both sizes of Allen key to hand, otherwise I would have been grinding my teeth!

Once I got over these niggling assembly issues the mini pier seems very solid and will do the job it is intended for.
