New to astronomy but liked the prompt delivery and very happy with the telescope, now adding more accessories.
This was in the nature of an impulse buy for me, as I thought it would be useful to have a telescope which would be quick to set up, didn't need a massive tripod and could give images with no chromatic aberration at high magnification. Impulse buys are sometimes regretted, but the Skymax 102 certainly wasn't. Optically and mechanically, I can't fault it. The performance was a welcome surprise; at 130x with the inexpensive 10mm eyepiece supplied, the image is still satisfyingly sharp. Focusing is smooth and quite easy even with the smallish focusing knob, and I can't see any significant mirror shift. I have larger telescopes, and obviously, these will show more, but any limitations with the 102 are only due to the size and not the optical quality; with a 102mm aperture, there is still plenty to see. As it's a Maksutov, the field of view isn't as wide as could be obtained with a refractor, or other types of reflector, but anyone buying one of these will presumably be aware of this. However, it will fill the field of a wide angle 25mm eyepiece; I find a bit of cut-off with a 32mm Ploessl. I think it's worth fitting a better finder than the standard Skywatcher RDF supplied. This is fine for the Moon and brighter objects, but it does give a cyan cast darkens the view rather too much for fainter subjects. But this is a very minor point compared with the telescope's quality.
Ordered and bought this telescope, excellent service yet again from FLO , asked a couple of questions before buying got speedy and helpful answers and advice, arrived swiftly. Set the telescope up no problem and had it out tonight in between the clouds , amazing views of the moon and then moved onto Jupiter WOW amazing , can’t wait to get out in a clear night now, thanks FLO
The Skymax102 is nice and compact making it very portable. Also comes with a carrying bag which is a nice plus. Great finish, optics are very good and cooling time is ok. I was surprised by the nice views of Jupiter and Saturn with both the 25mm and 10mm eyepieces. Coupled with an imaging camera like an ASI120MC, good images of the planets and the moon can be obtained. If you are looking for something portable that is going to give you great views of planets and the moon then this little scope is one of the best for the job
The Skywatcher 116mm tube rings will fit the Skymax 102 telescope.
