About this product

Model:  stellamira_125mm_f7.8_cf
Part Number:  125mmF7.8ED CF

This StellaMira 125mm ED Doublet telescope is from the same stable as the highly regarded StellaMira 90mm ED Triplet.

Designed for the discerning astronomer or astrophotographer.

Fully multi-coated air-spaced doublet optics with ED glass equal to FPL-53 and Lanthanum provide incredible, high-contrast views with very low chromatic aberration.

The sturdy 2.5" Rack & Pinion dual-speed focuser with 1:10 fine focusing and an integral rotator provides excellent load-bearing capacity and smooth, precise focus adjustments.

The CNC-machined aluminium fittings and Carbon Fibre tube ensure high strength and excellent thermal properties.

A matching 0.8x StellaMira Reducer/Field-Flattener is also available that enables astrophotography at f/6.2 with an evenly illuminated imaging circle large enough for sensor sizes up to and including APS-C.

The price includes CNC tube rings, a Vixen-style dovetail mounting bar (not the Losmandy-style bar shown in photos), a carry handle, and a custom-designed Oklop carry case.

Fantastic Telescope & great service from FLO
26 March 2024  |

I currently own a Skywatcher ED80Pro and a GSO 12" Dobsonian. I was in the market for something in between bought in memory of my Mum who passed away recently.

After a lot of email questions to Chris at FLO, I eventually took onboard the excellent advice and pulled the trigger on the Stella Mira 125.

First light came around in just a few days after prompt delivery from FLO. Seeing conditions weren't the best as although perfect clear skies, the moon was 3/4 full and extremely bright. However, it still delivered the wow factor I was looking for. I was able to chuck my 5mm Vixen SLV and a 2x barlow on the moon, which blew me away. The contrast and clarity of the craters was something to behold, you could see the jagged edges of the ridges like you could reach out and touch them! I've also never seen such contrast on Tycho's ejection lines.

The Orion Nebula was washed out by the bright moon over the next few clear nights, but I could still see plenty of nebulosity and darker patches, and the stars of the Trapezium were tack sharp. Stars in general with this scope are as expected near perfect points of light!

The Double Cluster in Perseus was a great sight, plenty of resolved stars right to the centre. Although not in an ideal position now, I also had a go at Jupiter. In my 32mm, although the planet was tiny, the 2 main belts were clearly visible and dark against the brightness of the disc. For laughs I tried my 5mm and a 2x barlow expecting the usual blur in the eyepiece, but I was shocked to see one of my best views ever of Jupiter. A nice decent size in the eyepiece, belts clearly visible with detail. I cannot wait to look at the planets when they're in optimum viewing conditions and position.

The build quality of the scope is fantastic and for a 5" refractor it is pretty light and sits perfectly on my HEQ5Pro mount.

This telescope is the perfect fit for me and I look forward to many nights of viewing with this cracking instrument.

Simply Awesome
21 January 2024  |

I was apprehensive to make such a large purchase on a telescope that doesn't have any reviews here on FLO, and with all the usual forums only really talking about the scope for visual use I initially held off as I would be using it for astrophotography, finally FLO's Christmas sale convinced me to take the plunge.
Bought as an upgrade to my Skywatcher 72ED Pro and to pair with my asi294mc Pro camera and HEQ5 Pro mount with rowan belt upgrade, my requirements were: A focal length of at least 700mm after adding flattener/reducer and a scope as light as possible so as to not overburden my mount, so I was left choosing between the SW 120ED DS Pro, or the StellaMira. The StellaMira just won in terms of specs with its slightly larger lens, less weight, f6.2 speed when used with the matched reducer/flattener and a focal length of 780mm.
The scope arrived in typical FLO fashion, with speed and care and without issue. I had a couple of queries about the scope once I received it that FLO were very helpful with and fast in replying.
The scope looks and feels like a quality bit of kit and the carbon fiber and anodized red metal go really well together and remind me a little of William Optics scopes, it only comes with a fabric bag filled with shaped foam compared to the metal cases Skywatchers scopes come in but in fairness its sturdy enough to house the scope and keep it protected, just make sure you don't stack anything on top of the bag.
The focuser is super smooth and doesn't have a problem holding the reducer, filter holder and camera without even being fully tightened down. The entire focus tube also acts as a frame rotator, by loosening the thumbscrew on the red housing you can then rotate the entire focus tube and then lock it back down which is a great help. The metal handle has a ton of mounting holes which allowed me to easily mount my 60mm guide scope using its mounting rings in a central position on my scope,.
I finally managed to get first light with this scope a couple of nights ago and decided to choose a target I was familiar with from using my 72ED, M81 and M82. I was able to collect 3 and a half hours of 3 minute subs and was eager to inspect the data. As hoped, the image quality was absolutely amazing compared to what I was used to from my 72ED Pro (which was still "good". The much better quality glass doesn't leave those ugly blue stars when trying to get good color when processing, my setups pixel ratio almost halving increased image sharpness massively and along with the increased focal length made so much more detail become visible from both M81 and M82. After processing M81 is showing most if not all of its finer dust lanes and all of the veiny detail in M82 is readily apparent, and this was just from the best 3 hours worth of subs, from my back garden in a bortle 6 area and using an Optolong L-Pro filter. The weight of this scope and setup as a whole was no issue what-so-ever for my mount which was happily managing sub 1.0 total RMS images with just a rough polar alignment which is basically exactly how it performed with my 72ED Pro.
Needless to say I am over the moon with my purchase and excited to revisit all of my old targets as well as some new ones that will be much better matched for this increased focal length, galaxy season just got way more fun!
If there's anyone else out there who has been holding off on buying one of these for astrophotography because of the lack of talk/reviews online then fear no more, it's definitely up to the job!
