An excellent Mini PC for Astrophotography Capture and Automation

We use a number of these at FLO smiley

We are often asked to recommend computers to people who are looking to build an imaging rig. These Mini PC's are excellent value for money. They are very small but pack a lot of power so perfect for setting up next to your telescope running capture software such as NINA, SGP, ASCOM, EQMOD, SharpCap, FireCapture, etc.

Great for capturing data but can also be used for processing, though for processing images we recommend something larger, beefier and less portable!

This small yet powerful Mini PC  Window 10 Professional pre-installed but can be upgraded to Windows 11. Windows 10 Professional means it includes a remote desktop server so you can remotely access the MiniPC from a laptop / desktop / tablet from inside your house to see and control what is happening.

An Intel Celeron J4125 quad-core processor runs at 2.0GHz as standard but can peak at 2.7GHz in burst mode when additional performance is required. This low energy chip is powerful enough for most capture tasks without stalling or delays and can be run from a battery pack (not supplied).

8GB DDR4 provides enough memory to run multiple applications at once and in our experience is plenty for a capture platform.

We have chosen the 256GB M.2 SATA SSD version which has plenty of available space for software and imaging captures. If you are planning to use this for solar / planetary / lunar video capture then you may want to consider fitting another larger hard drive as video can gobble up space very quickly! An external USB3.0 drive would do the trick or you could install an additional 2.5" SATA hard drive internally.

These mini PCs have very low noise and are super light - approx 269 grams. and

The compact size (115x102x43mm) enables it to easily be mounted somewhere convenient on or next to your telescope or mount.

Great Mini PC
27 November 2023  |

Changed my laptop for this mini pc, I've now got 4 USB3 ports connected to two cameras, a pegasus focuscube and the mount all working with NINA. A trouble free first session and all working wireless from the warmth of the house! Very happy with the PC dropped one star as the power cable (too short) and the bracket aren't designed with astrophotography in mind. Would still recommend the mini pc.

Bought for my little girl's setup

This thing is awesome. It's quick, it's quiet, and it's easy. It's my first introduction to Win 11, but it just...works. Had zero issues with Green Swamp Server, APT, PHD2 or ASCOM. Would I recommend it? Well I'm buying one to replace my own old Intel NUC, so I can't recommend it much more than that!

Specification update
18 May 2023  |

Just received this unit with usual first class service from FLO.
Just to update anyone wishing to purchase that my unit came with Windows 11 pro installed, I have been able to remote the unit from my windows 10 home edition laptop with no problem and Wi-Fi connection seems to work well in the garden where I have had connection problems before so looking forward to using this set up when weather permits.

Almost Perfect
30 December 2021  |

Bought as an alternative to the ASAIR as I have too much non-ZWO gear which I have no intention of replacing. Has taken all the drivers and software needed for image capture (ASCOM, EQMOD, focusers, filterwheel, cameras, Polemaster, PHD2, APT, etc) with plenty of room on the hard drive to accommodate image files. It will be placed on the mount or OTA and controlled from the warmth of my armchair via Remote Desktop. Perfect.

Well, almost. The included 12v/2amp mains adapter lead is a measly 1m long, which means I can't plug it into my ground-level extension cable without having to buy an adaptor with a longer mains lead or mount the pc on the tripod, which was not my first choice. That's why it's 4 stars instead of 5.

Great little mini computer
24 December 2021  |

Bought this, and added a 2.5 inch 500GB SSD. Then I loaded KUbuntu 20.04 onto the 500GB drive. This now allows me to boot either into the pre-loaded Windows 10 Pro, or my preferred Linux. I am powering the box via a Pegasus Astro Power Box Advance, using the 2.1mm centre positive cable that comes with the PPBA. Not had the chance actually run it yet - poor weather conditions, and I still need to do some mounting work to attach it to the OTA tube rings. I found the BIOS setup to change the default boot device from the 256GB Windows to the 500GB Linux disk somewhat confusing, but once I had worked it out it appears to work great and should perform significantly better than my old Raspberry Pi. It is pretty light, and in fact feels lighter than my Pi when it is in the Argon M.2 case (which is actually quite a heavy metal case, while the GKmini is plastic).

It's nice that it came included with screws and mounting plate, often this is a accessory that needs to be purchased separately.

Great mini-PC, perfect for a mobile set up
23 December 2021  |

This little box packs a great punch and is perfect for running an observatory! I actually wanted this for my mobile set up, but having got it all set up and running, this this would be more than adequate for a fixed installation...

With 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, there is plenty of capacity for guiding and capturing - either for deep sky and planetary./lunar. I have installed all of my astro software, all with no issues at all, and it will happily run Cart du Ciel alongside PHD2 and SGPro.

I have added a personal hotspot router to the set up, and with this all configured, the GK boots and connects to the router in less than a minute.

I will using this for lunar imaging as well, and have yet to get this set up and configured, but see no reason why it won't do exactly what I need for that either - although I will add an additional SSD for the capture of those larger files.

All in all, I am really pleased! Nice and small form factor should be easily mountable, quick to boot up with plenty of capacity! What is not to like??!!
