About this product

Model:  baader-herschel-wedge_mkii-2956510P
Part Number:  2956510P

The Baader 2" Herschel Safety Wedge Solar Prism MkII provides high contrast detailed white light solar views.

For use only with suitable refractor telescopes.

This latest version incorporating an innovative Light Trap developed by Baader Planetarium brings the Herschel Wedge into the 21st Century by rendering the output energy cool and diffused! In all other Herschel designs, the waste energy is deflected out of the rear face of the prism by an angled mirror. Though quite safe with careful use, the user still had to be aware not to place any object (or body part..) into this output beam (and to prevent any casual onlooker from carelessly staring up into the beam). Thanks to Baader Planetarium, this concern has now been completely removed. In place of the typical output mirror is a coated multi-layered perforated steel screen. The bright light and heat energy are harmlessly diffused. Even after prolonged observations through large refractors, the light trap remains cool. You can even place a hand below the output and no heat can be felt (also, there is no tempting, hazardous bright light output for careless eyes to see).

Features

  • Superior in resolution and contrast to the best glass objective filters around.
  • Provides a true white-light view and does not filter any visual wavelengths.
  • Uses a precision 2" Zeiss wedge prism and incorporates a permanently pre-installed ND=3.0 filter in the wedge housing.
  • Waste energy is sent through Baader's innovative Light Trap.
  • Includes Baader's 2" ClickLock eyepiece clamping mechanism.

The advantages of the Safety Cool-Ceramic Herschel prism

  • Space-Technology: A multiple staggered light trap made of heat protection sheets and heat-absorbing special ceramics as the end of the light trap - similar to heat tiles on the space shuttle - absorbs the radiant heat without overheating the surroundings. The prism also remains temperature-stable for a long time.

  • Enclosed housing: No risk of glare or fire from the emitted sunlight; observation is possible without danger

  • Solar Finder: The ceramic plate also acts as a screen for the sunlight beam. Aiming the telescope at the sun becomes very easy.

  • ClickLock“ Clamp: With a 15° rotation, you clamp every eyepiece securely - even in winter with heavy gloves.

  • Short overall length: shortening the overall length by 30 mm for the use of DSLR or Binoviewers with optional T-2 adapter Diamond Steeltrack® S58 to T-2 BDS-Adapter (#2957202, ) or  Diamond Steeltrack® S58 to M48 BDS-Adapter (#2957204,)
  • Filter Holder: All necessary filters are firmly installed in the housing on the rotatable filter holder - no danger when changing eyepieces!
  • Brightness adjustment for photography: To let enough light through for photography at high magnifications, the pre-installed ND3 filter can be replaced by weaker filters (sold separately or included with the photo version). Baader Safety CoolCeramic Herschel Prism 2" Photographic (#2956510P).

Baader offers two versions of their Herschel Wedge:

Both versions include

  • 2" wedge prism according to Herschel - one-sided Phantom Group® anti-reflective coating, with ceramic solar finder and 2" ClickLock® eyepiece holder
  • Integrated rotation mechanism for polarising filters – the best method for brightness adjustment in visual solar observation and solar photography in white light
  • Stepless brightness adjustment is made possible with the optional  Baader Single Polarizing Filter 2" (#2408342), and the included Neutral Density Filter. The polarising filters are not included in the scope of delivery
  • Including Baader 7.5 nm Solar Continuum Filter 2" (540nm) (#2961581) for an uncompromisingly sharp solar image
  • S58 dovetail and Safety Kerfs on the 2" nose-piece, New 3-point adjustment system preset in the factory

Visual V
The Version-V for visual use comes with a pre-installed ND=3.0 (required for safe viewing) filter and a 2" 7.5nm Continuum Filter.

Photographic P

The photographic version includes the following:

  •   Baader Safety CoolCeramic Herschel Prism 2" Visual (#2956510V)
  •   Baader 7.5 nm Solar Continuum Filter 2" (540nm) (#2961581)
  •   Baader Neutral Density Filter 2" (ND 3.0, T=0.1%) (#2458332,)
  •   Baader Neutral Density Filter 2" (ND 1.8, T=1.5%) (#2458331,)
  •   Baader Neutral Density Filter 2" (ND 0.9, T=12.5%) (#2458322,)
  •   Baader Neutral Density Filter 2" (ND 0.6, T=25%) (#2458321,)

The fine-optically polished genuine Baader ND filters incorporate special anti-reflection multi-coatings to minimise light scatter and ghosting for maximum image contrast. The result is image quality unachievable with any other ND filter.

Baader Herschel Wedge Instructions and safety information.

IMPORTANT:

1. The Baader Herschel Wedge must only be used with Refractor telescopes with metal and glass construction, not plastic. Telescopes with apertures 70-120mm work particularly well. Larger apertures can cause the rear heat trap to become uncomfortably hot.

2. Not suitable for use with Petzval or other telescope designs with a rear lens element positioned close to the focuser drawtube.

3. Due to production standards, the 2“ nosepiece in front of the Baader Safety Herschel-Prism features a 2“ (M48) filter thread. However - never mount a 2"“ filter in front of the Baader Herschel Wedge! Any filter mounted into the full solar energy beam so near the focus point will become extremely hot and damaged within seconds (see safety advice, page 3 in manual). Filters must only be mounted above the exiting side of the prism.

4. Solar observing is dangerous and can be hazardous to eyesight. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, please use the correct equipment and read the safety notes supplied with the products carefully.

Good Herschel Wedge
06 July 2023  |

A Herschel wedge is a great way to view the sun and this is a very good wedge. Well designed and made and gives very sharp views. I mostly use it in my Tak FC100DF and it is a very good match. I would give 5 stars but it is pretty pricey, so loses a star.
