Surprisingly good; excellent VFM

I initially got this to make a "smart scope" that I could operate with my tablet for doing outreach (to avoid "eyepiece issues" in Covid times), but I have since installed the firmware to put it into EQ mode, put it on a wedge, added a counterweight bar, and it is now part of my ultra-portable imaging rig, replacing my Mk 1 Star Adventurer for everything except DSLR widefield stuff. Initially, it wasn't running as smoothly as I'd hoped, so I voided the warranty within a week of getting it, Super-lubed bits that needed it, and removed original grease from bits that didn't. It's nice that it's now a "cult following" item, because you can now find out how extend its capabilities if you so wish.

Excellent small mount

Thanks to FLO for good price and shipping.
The mount can be used manually or via Wi-Fi. The auxillary encoder function is fantastic that allows manual tweaking when you wish. Additionally, I purchased a Synscan hand controller just because I prefer it. The mount is light but sturdy. Well, it does not resist wind like a big mount but it is okay for a grab and go scope.
I use it mainly for Solar with a 80mm doublet refractor, a Daystar Quark, a binoviewer and a big solar hood. It works very well at the limit of the payload at least for visual use. The mount fits in my large size luggage when I place it oblique. There is a lot of space left for other belongings. I carry 80mm refractor in the cabin luggage. So it is transportable via airlines. I love the track Sun function.

Must have Grab and Go mount

This is the best little mount ever. I like it so much this is the second one I've purchased. Versatile, easy to use, extremely portable, lightweight yet able to handle a decent payload. You can use the app to operate it with your smart phone or purchase a SynScan hand controller. I find the app awkward to use in the dark so I prefer a hand controller but that's a matter of personal preference. You can use battery power or shore power. I put anything between a 80mm f4 refractor to a 127mm Mak on it. It handled the weight of my f7 102mm refractor but the tube length was too long for stability. I can't speak for service life because I haven't had my GTi for very long but with it's metal innards I cannot image that it won't last as long as it's not abused. Two thumbs up, five stars, etc.

I am now using the AZ GTi mount well beyond its original designed intentions as an alt-az go-to mount for observing. I am using it in EQ mode, platesolving with NINA and using it with a guidescope for hours of deepsky astrophotography. And I keep finding more things the mount can do natively or be modified to do. If you do a youtube search you will see that it has something of a cult following (!), with many 'how-to' videos on how to get more from this mount than you would expect for the price. I am sure that at some point in the not-too-distant future Skywatcher will cotton on to the fact that they are under-charging for this, considering it can be made to perform almost as well as a full size mount for a fraction of the cost (not officially supported by Skywatcher mind, though they do offer the EQ driver on their website complete with disclaimers). So yeah, that very rarest of things in this hobby; something that you feel should cost more for what it does !

I could go on to describe in detail some of the hacks available but the youtube videos do it better. Even if you only use it for go-to observations it's still a great buy as a portable and/or secondary mount, or even your main mount to be honest!

The wifi performance is rock solid (within its range) and tracking accuracy (tested up to 250mm focal length) is good, but can be made near-perfect by using a guide camera.

In summary buy this, it's really good.

After updating the firmware this mount converts to an equatorial mount for easier tracking of deep space objects, very impressed…

Perfect Goto Mount
Friday, 28 January 2022  |

Purchased this mount along with the extension tube to replace my EQ2 motor driven mount that held my Skywatcher 130m scope. This holds my scope safe and secure despite its size.
Although the scope is within its weight limit it still requires a counterweight to balance it out. I would also say the 130m is the mounts limit concerning size but it still carries it well..
The phone app that I use with it is also very good as you can set parameters to suit your scope so it does not trash your scope in your tripod. If you are using the Android app, use it on an older phone that uses Android 10 or earlier as Using Android 11 is a real faff.

Delivered quickly and was well packaged from FLO.

Perfect small mount

This is a great portable mount that I have found to be very reliable in it's tracking. Can't go wrong unless you put too much weight on it but it's perfect for a small refractor or camera/lens setup.

Please fill in the form below to ask a question.

Q1. Is there a counterweight bar that fits AZ GTi?

Not officially but we have found the counterweight bar from the EQ1 mount does fit.

Q2. How do I convert this to EQ mode?

You will need to add an Equatorial wedge such as the Star Adventurer wedge then flash the firmware.

If using anything heavier than a small lens you may need to add a counterweight and bar via the M12 threaded hole on the mount.
